Board of Education Approves Expansion of Sunset Ridge Elementary

The Middleton-Cross Plains Area Board of Education on Monday night voted unanimously to move ahead with plans to expand Sunset Ridge Elementary.

The current estimated cost for the project is about $1.39 million, but the  figure won’t firm up until construction bids come back to the school board for review in the spring.

The proposal, which is intended to alleviate overcrowding, calls for a total of four new classrooms, including one for art, one for music, and two for core curriculum.

While a successful referendum in 2012 allows the district to exceed levy limits and spend just under $60 million to expand and upgrade Kromrey Middle School in the City of Middleton and Glacier Creek Middle School in the Village of Cross Plains, the Sunset Ridge project in the Town of Middleton will come out of the district’s existing fund balance.

City Talks With New Developer About Blackhawk Land

Is a parcel of city-owned land on the edge of Pleasant View Golf course worth a million dollars, or is it’s fair market value closer to $200,000? The answer depends on whom you ask.

The City of Middleton and multiple local developers remain far apart on the true value of the roughly three-acre parcel on Blackhawk Road. However, the city is currently in what one source called “deep negotiations” with two people who wish to build there.

Don Michelson, a commercial real estate advisor, and Bob Harriman, of R.G. Harriman General Contractors, wish to buy the land and build seven three- and four-unit buildings, for a total of 25 units. Michelson and Harriman gave a presentation to the Middleton City Council on Feb. 5, laying out the reasons they believe a purchase price of $208,000 would be reasonable.

They hope to acquire the land, build the structures and begin leasing them out by the end of this year.

Police Warn of 'Grandparent Scam'

From the Middleton Police Department:

Several City of Middleton residents have reported receiving phone calls from grandchildren claiming to be stranded outside of the United States this week.  The callers are saying they need money wired to them immediately and, while one victim got suspicious and hung up and called her grandson to verify that he was home and was fine, at least one victim that we know of sent $1,000 before realizing it was a scam.

If you receive a call like this, always consider verifying the whereabouts of the actual person that the caller is claiming to be and consider the following information from the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) to protect yourself from being a victim:

Fighting Town Board No Walk in the Park For Dog Lovers

As the snow fell last week and cars slipped and slid on Summerfield Drive, Troy Alton’s 14-year old daughter Arria had to keep one eye on “Tanner,” the family dog, and the other on the road—with no sidewalks or curb between them. But Arria’s father, oral surgeon Troy Alton got little sympathy at the Middleton Town Board meeting last week when his request to schedule additional public input on Middleton’s dog walking restrictions was turned down. “We won’t go that way,” declared board chairman Milo Breunig, “We’ve asked the Parks [Dept.] to look at it and we’ll wait for them to get back to us.”

Neighbor Cool Under Pressure When Apartment Fire Breaks Out

They don’t call Middleton the Good Neighbor City for nothing.

Shortly before 10 p.m. Tuesday, a resident on the second floor of an apartment building in the Forest Harbor complex at 2070 Allen Boulevard noticed thick black smoke spewing from a neighbor’s living quarters. Hector Guerra dashed toward the apartment, grabbed a fire extinguisher, and took aim at flames that caused an estimated $55,000 to $60,000 in damage and left several families temporarily homeless.

The 16-unit building is located near Allen Boulevard’s intersection with University Avenue. One person was transported to an area hospital for smoke inhalation.

Brad Subera, a battalion chief with the Middleton Fire Department, said the blaze began atop an electric stove. “The resident turned on the knobs, then decided not to cook and went to take a nap,” he said. “There were some household goods on the stove and they caught fire.”
