Middleton's best of the best

Several state tournament appearances — again.

Numerous conference championships.

Remarkable consistency throughout the athletic department.

It was another sensational year for the sports teams at Middleton High School, where the Cardinals remarkably seem to raise the bar every year.

Of course, some achievements rank as the best of the best. Here’s one person’s opinion of that list:

Girls team of the year: Golf

One year after struggling through a miserable season, Middleton’s girls golf team played with both passion and precision. The Cardinals won the Big Eight Conference dual meet championship, then won regional and sectional titles for the first time in head coach Jeff Kenas’ six years.

The Cardinals capped that with a solid showing at the WIAA Division 1 state meet and finished sixth overall.

Sauk tops Middleton

It was ugly at the start. And it didn’t get any better by the end.

Middleton’s Home Talent League team was routed by host Sauk Prairie, 10-3, on Sunday. Middleton fell to 8-4 in the Northern Section’s East Division and now sits two games behind league-leading Black Earth.

“I feel that we played a lot better than the 10-3 score showed,” Middleton manager Brandon Hellenbrand said. “Sauk did an excellent job of putting the ball in play and making things happen.”

Sauk pounded out 20 hits against Middleton starter Drew Farrell and reliever Jeff Schafer.

Farrell threw five innings, allowed six runs. Schafer allowed four runs over the final three frames.

“Farrell threw well today, it just seemed like everything that hit their bat found a hole,” Hellenbrand said. “They really didn’t hit him all that hard, they just found the right holes.  The same thing with happened with Schafer.”

Middleton's HTL team edges Cross Plains

Eric Simon was prepared for almost anything on a beautiful and sunny Fourth of July afternoon at Sorenson-Bakken Field.

The Home Talent League veteran started in right field and pitched the final four innings as Middleton rallied for two runs in the bottom of the eighth inning for an exciting 6-5 victory over Cross Plains in a Northern Section East Division game.

Simon scattered five hits and allowed one run with two strikeouts over the final four innings. He relieved starting right-hander Andrew Zimmerman in the sixth inning with the ‘29ers trailing 4-2.

Middleton fell to Sauk Prairie, 10-3, on Sunday, though and slipped to 8-4 in the division. And when Black Earth (10-2) won a pair of weekend games, the Bombers took control of the divisional race.

Still, Middleton’s win over Cross Plains — one its top rivals — provided plenty of fireworks.

Middleton Man Injured in Highway 14 Crash

At 6:25 am, Dane County Sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to Highway 14 and Kahl Road in the town of Black Earth for a three-vehicle crash.

Fletcher McGiveron, age 48 of Middleton, was facing westbound and stopped at the intersection of Highway 14 and Kahl Road in his Kia Rio, when he was rear-ended by a Pontiac Sunfire operated by Tory Rowe, age 16 of Arena.  The collision caused the Kia Rio to spin around into traffic and side swipe a Honda Accord operated by Kathleen Olson, age 59 of Black Earth.  The Pontiac Sunfire flipped over and came to rest on its roof.

Mazomanie and Cross Plains EMS, and Cross Plains Police, responded to the scene.  Tory Rowe was transported to UW Hospital with minor injuries; the other drivers were not injured.  Rowe will be cited for Inattentive Driving.

Battle Of The Badges Returns

It was simple coin toss, but its meaning was so much more.

On Tuesday morning last week around 9 a.m.,  Middleton Fire Chief Aaron Harris and Middleton Police Chief Brad Keil flipped a special Middleton Police Department coin to decide who will be the home team at the second annual Battle of the Badges in August.

The charity softball game between the two departments will raise awareness and funds to help families affected by childhood cancer.  This year they will play for five-year-old Cole Truitt, who was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia on Nov. 6. The fire department won Tuesday’s toss and will be the home team in 2013.

The Battle of the Badges was originally inspired by James Helmuth, who died earlier this year.

City Council Approves Ordinance Requiring Contractors To Provide Benefits To Domestic Partners

Most contractors who want to do business with the City of Middleton will have to provide health insurance to the same-sex domestic partners of their employees, following a recent vote by the common council.

The city’s own health insurance plan already covered domestic partners.  According to assistant city administrator John Lehman, the city wanted to ensure that “contractors doing business with the city also offer the same coverage to their employees since they are acting on [Middleton’s] behalf.”

The ordinance indicates the requirements “are for the protection and welfare of the public in the performance of all public contracts.”

Ald. JoAnna Richard (Dist. 3) said she was pleased with the change.

City Board Of Review Lowers Assessment In Latest Chapter Of Hall Lumber Saga

It’s often said that a good compromise sends both sides home a little unhappy. If that’s the case, a recent decision by the Middleton Board of Review was a good compromise.

The board lowered the assessment for a local lumber yard in the latest development in a saga that will cost both the city and the business far more in legal fees than they could hope to recoup through the difference in taxes.

The board voted 4-1 to set the value of the land at $869,700, in agreement with city assessor Paul Musser. However, the board decided to only value improvements on the property at $100,000, a figure $200,000 lower than the one set by Musser.

Arguing on behalf of the city, attorney Matt Fleming contended Hall Lumber had failed to provide enough hard evidence to convince the board of review to overcome a legally required assumption that the assessor’s findings are correct.

Girls soccer team lands 9 on all-conference team

Mary Duffy was thrilled.

And more often than not, that’s a rare feeling when coaches leave all-conference meetings.

But Duffy, Middleton’s girls soccer coach, was awfully happy with this year’s Big Eight Conference results.

The Cardinals had nine players named all-Big Eight, including four first-team all-conference selections. Middleton had one second-team pick and four honorable-mention all-conference choices.

“I am really pleased with the all conference picks,” Duffy said. “We finished third in the conference, but were able to get four players on first (team), one on second and four on honorable mention.”

Senior keeper Meghan Ledin, a University of Wisconsin recruit, led Middleton’s first-team selections. Junior forward Ellen Jesse, junior midfielder Leia Peterman and senior defender Carly Kirkpatrick were also named first-team.
