Boys spikers headed to state

Connor Zimmick didn’t waste any time looking up information on the 2013 WIAA boys volleyball sectional tournament after his Middleton Cardinals were eliminated a in the sectional title match at Kettle Moraine a year ago.

What the senior setter discovered not only made him smile, but it also made Zimmick more determined than ever to leave his mark on the program.

“When the schedule came out and I saw this night would be on my birthday, I said that was the match we had to get to,” Zimmick said last Thursday. “I did everything in my power. I willed the team. I tried to keep everyone’s spirits up and focused on the goal. That was winning the games.”

Zimmick did exactly that and led Middleton to a 30-28, 21-25, 25-19, 25-19 win over Kettle Moraine. The Cardinals earned their sixth trip to state in the program’s history and their first since 2009.

Boys spikers one step from state

All season long, Middleton boys volleyball coach Ben White has asked his team to develop a closer’s mentality.

On Tuesday night, the Cardinals resembled Mariano Rivera.

Middleton cruised past visiting Beloit Memorial, 25-18, 25-19, 25-17, in a WIAA sectional semifinal. And the Cardinals’ performance down the stretch in each game was extremely impressive.

“We played our best down the stretch of each set, and that’s the first time I can say that this year,” White said. “I was impressed at how we closed out the sets against Beloit. We haven’t had much success doing that this year.”

Middleton advanced to a sectional final against Kettle Moraine, a match the Cardinals will host Thursday at 7 p.m. The state tournament is Nov. 15-16 at Wisconsin Lutheran College in Milwaukee.

Middleton had an extremely balanced attack in beating the Purple Knights for a third time this season.

Spectrum Brands Opens New Headquarters

Spectrum Brands Holdings, Inc. (NYSE: SPB) announced Tuesday its world headquarters, several North American divisional operations and its technology center, in all totaling more than 500 full-time employees, have moved into a newly built and more economical and energy-efficient facility in the Discovery Springs area of Middleton. In January 2012 the company announced plans to move to the new facility before the end of 2013.

The company, which considered moving its world headquarters (relocated from Atlanta in 2010) and North American Remington(R) personal care operations to Miramar, Florida, where its Russell Hobbs home appliances subsidiary acquired in June 2010 already occupied a suitably sized building, decided to stay in the greater Madison area due to major space efficiencies and other cost savings, as well as Tax Increment Financing from the City of Middleton. The new building can accommodate as many as 675 full-time employees.

City Works To Soften Blow Of Tax Increase

With the Middleton City Council preparing to vote on the 2014 budget in the coming weeks, a recently proposed scenario for balancing the budget is front and center.

In recent finance committee meetings, city staff offered a tentative course of action which included reducing the general contingency account, eliminating the 2014 HRA contribution, freezing an anticipated vacancy in the Public Works Department, eliminating Saturday bus service and funding the confluence pond dredging project from Tax Increment District (TID) 3 rather than the General Capital Budget.

This proposed 2014 budget as it stands right now is based on a line-item analysis approach developed by Finance Committee Chairman and District 8 alderman Mark Sullivan. The method centers on selecting department line items that are the lower than the 2012 actual expenditures or the 2013 budgets.

Tax Forms No Longer Available At Library

From the desk of Pamela Westby, director of the Middleton Public Library:

Preprinted income tax forms will no longer be available at Middleton Public Library in 2014. The late release of printed forms in 2013 from both the Federal and State level, difficulties in obtaining the most frequently requested forms and instructions, and the move toward electronic tax filing have persuaded library staff that it is no longer a service we should offer.

Because of changing tax laws in the past two years, the IRS has had to delay printing and distributing forms. People become frustrated when they made multiple trips to the library hoping to pick up their tax forms only to learn the forms are not yet available. We want people to have a good experience at the library, but where tax forms are concerned, that’s been taken out of our control.

Will New Public Works Building Feature Recycling Center?

The Middleton Common Council two weeks ago discussed the impending move of the Municipal Operations Center.

As Meriter Health Services is now prepared to move forward with constructing a sprawling new medical campus east of the Beltline at Century Avenue and Laura Lane, the city’s Public Works Department activities at their current garage must end in March of 2015.

Meriter’s development necessitates that Public Works moves into a new Municipal Operations Center on land currently owned by the State Department of Transportation (DOT) at the north end of Parmenter Street.

At last week’s meeting, city administrator Mike Davis urged the common council to reach a consensus regarding the cost of the proposed Municipal Operations Center (MOC) and related key issues.

City Plan Commission Votes To Demolish Old Middleton Outreach Ministry Building

The Middleton Plan Commission views demolition as the most reasonable course of action for the former Middleton Outreach Ministry (MOM) headquarters due to its deteriorating condition.  Despite a request for proposals from developers made by the city earlier this year, there has been no interest in renovating the aging building, commissioners learned last week.

MOM left the building late last year in an effort to consolidate services and forego   the costly maintenance needed to remain operational.  The site was acquired by the city earlier using tax increment financing (TIF).  The purchase was for the purpose of future parking needs and potential redevelopment downtown.

The request for proposals involved a long-term lease keeping the property in the city’s possession with no option to buy outright.
