Middleton swimmers win Nicolet Sprints

It was a grueling, challenging first week of the season for Middleton’s boys swimming and diving team.

It was also a rewarding one.

After a rough start to the week, Middleton finished by winning the Nicolet Sprints last Saturday. The Cardinals finished with 340.5 points to easily outdistance runner-up Shorewood (277.5). Grafton (244), Cedarburg (242) and Marquette (228) rounded out the top five.

Middleton also had a fourth place finish at the Brookfield Invite last Tuesday and dropped a 126.5-43.5 decision to Madison Memorial last Friday.

“This is a good stepping stone for the rest of the season,” Middleton coach Sam Niesen said. “I've been working them extremely hard and seeing how they prepare themselves to swim while they're sore. I'm happy with a lot of the times I've been seeing and I'm once again very excited to see how well we can taper down towards the end of the year.”

Middleton’s relay teams shined at Nicolet.

Wresters win Nicolet Scramble

Middleton wrestling coach Kent Weiler believes he has the makings of a stellar team this season.

And the first weekend of the season only enhanced that belief.

Middleton won the 10-team Nicolet Knight Scramble last Saturday in impressive fashion. The Cardinals finished with 223.5 points to edge runner-up Menomonee Falls (203.5). Valders (201.5), Nicolet (181.5) and Hartford (177) rounded out the top five.

“Team effort,” Weiler said. “It was a good day, everyone got better as the day went on.”

Middleton received first place finishes from Kevin Meicher at 132 pounds and Chris Rogers at 138. The Cardinals also got second place showings from Joseph Hoffman at 113, Max Mayhew (160), Dion Huff (170) and Caleb Cymbalak (182).

Middleton also received third place finishes from Colton Best (126) and Gavin Adler (195).

Meicher opened with a pin over Caleb Wentker of Valders in 2:13, then he pinned Dylan Spoerl of Brookfield East in 50 seconds.

Middleton hammers No. 2 Verona

It took Middleton nearly five minutes to break the ice with its first field goal of the game during its Big Eight Conference girls’ basketball season-opener last Tuesday night.

But after sophomore guard Claire Staples came off the bench to sink a three-pointer, the Cardinals surged ahead and never looked back.

Junior guard Bria Lemirande scored 19 points to pace four Cardinals in double figures as Middleton soared to a convincing 83-60 victory over Verona to get its conference season off to a stellar start.

“We weren’t really expecting that at all. We were expecting a tight game the whole time if not being down,” Bria Lemirande said. “But we had to keep pushing and keep our energy and intensity up.”

Middleton wrestlers thinking big

The drive for five has begun.

Middleton’s wrestlers have won either the Big Eight Conference tournament or dual meet title the past four years. And Cardinals veteran head coach Kent Weiler sees no reason that streak can’t reach five this season.

Middleton opens its year Friday with a home dual meet against Madison Memorial.

“Our goals are always to be better than last season” Weiler said. “We expect to win the conference duals and tournament outright.

“We are striving for five and we expect to win it outright this season. We do that by increasing the competition/intensity in the room on a daily basis. We are also knocking at the door of postseason team competition. For this to happen we will have to shore up a few holes and have some guys really step up.”

Middleton has eight returning letterwinners on the roster.

Swimmers aiming for big season

They have one of the state’s most steady and consistent programs.

They’re a force in the Big Eight Conference each winter. And they typically leave their mark on the state tournament.

This year figures to be much of the same for Middleton’s boys swimming and diving team.

The Cardinals finished seventh at state last year. Now, with a solid contingent of returnees and several gifted newcomers, Middleton could be poised for even bigger and better.

The Cardinals began their season Tuesday at the Brookfield East Invitational.

“I certainly believe we can better with our state placement, but it's going to be a tough road,” Middleton coach Sam Niesen said. “We lost a darn fantastic senior group from last year, and we'll need some of the younger boys to break out and show me that they're capable of filling those slots. We still have plenty of great talent and it'll be exciting to see the capabilities of the new swimmers.”

Hockey Cards jump to 4-0 start

Middleton’s hockey team is off to a fast start.

And Cardinals’ second-year head coach Steffon Walby believes his team could be headed for a special season.

The Cardinals rolled past University School, 4-1, last Friday. Middleton then defeated Waunakee, 6-3, last Saturday.

The Cardinals are now 4-0 and appear to be one of the top teams in the Big Eight Conference and the entire Madison area.

“Our goals, are simple — to get better every day and to improve on our overall awareness of where we fell short from last year,” Cardinals coach Steffon Walby said. “Put ourselves in a position to win the Big Eight and get back to sectionals again.”

Middleton returned a terrific defensive core this season. The Cardinals can also go four lines deep at forward.

Middleton was the No. 1 seed in its sectional last season, but lost to second-seeded Madison Memorial in the sectional finals. Middleton is hoping to take things one step further this winter.
