Staff Member Uses Racial Slur at High School

MIDDLETON–A Middleton High School staff member was put on paid leave last week after being accused of using a racial slur not once, but twice, in front of students. The incident, which came just days before Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day, may have surprised some in the district, but not Percy Brown, Director of Equity & Student Achievement in the Middleton Cross Plains Area School District (MCPASD), who noted incidents have been occurring in the neighboring Madison Metropolitan School District in the last few months.

MLK Jr. Forum on Social Action Held Saturday

MIDDLETON–The MHS Performing Arts Center was home to a celebration of the Martin Luther King Jr. Day holiday on Jan. 19. On a cold afternoon, hundreds of people of a diverse background warmed themselves to music provided by Tamera Stanley and the Mount Zion Baptist Church music ministry and dance by the #GK4LIFE dance troupe, a group of Glacier Creek and Kromrey Middle School students who provided a powerful hip hop expression for the forum. Dom Ricks, Dean of Students, moved the crowd with spoken word poetry which expressed a need for understanding in our community and how the movie, “Spiderman: Into the Spider-Verse,” offered the rare pleasure of seeing a black superhero as a model to whom young men of color can look up to.

Cabalka named Coach of the Year

Middleton girls swimming and diving coach Lauren Cabalka has been selected as the 2017-‘18 Central Coach of the Year by the National Federation High School Coaches Association.

The Central Coach of the Year is given to the top coach from Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan and Wisconsin.

Cabalka led Middleton to a third straight WIAA Division 1 state title in November. The Cardinals became just the ninth program in state history to win three consecutive state titles.

Middleton rolled to the team title in 2018, defeating runner-up Cedarburg, 249.50-188.0.

The Cardinals posted 313.50 points in 2017, well ahead of runner-up Cedarburg (242.0).

And Middleton’s 265.0 points in 2016 gave it a comfortable margin over runner-up Verona-Mount Horeb (215.50).

Middleton's girls rout Madison West

The layoff was barely noticeable.

The rust factor was minimal.

Middleton’s girls basketball team, which had a 10-day break, returned to the court on Jan. 19 and routed visiting Madison West, 71-29.

Senior center Hannah Flottmeyer led the way with 21 points and 15 rebounds, while junior forward Sitori Tanin added 17 points and 14 rebounds.

The Cardinals improved to 10-5 overall and 8-2 in the Big Eight Conference, one-game behind league-leading Sun Prairie in the loss column. West fell to 1-14, 0-11.

“West was a good game for us to get back into action after a 10-day layoff,” Middleton coach Jeff Kind said. “We had a little rust to shake off in the first half after exam week and the long break, but after we got going, we did some good things.”

They sure did.

Middleton, which can make a living with its pressure defense, played the entire game without pressing to work on its man to man defense.

Muskego downs Middleton's boys

BROOKFIELD — Middleton senior guard Sam Close left Brookfield Central High School on Jan. 19 with a T-shirt for being chosen as the Cardinals’ Player of the Game.

Many of Close’s teammates left town with ice cream after stopping at a legendary frozen custard restaurant.

Aside from that, Middleton’s trip east yielded one giant headache.

The Cardinals never found a rhythm offensively, shot just 25.5% and dropped a 55-39 decision to Muskego at the Luke Homan Memorial Showcase held at Brookfield Central High School. Close led the Cardinals with 16 points, including three three-pointers.

Middleton, which defeated Verona less than 24 hours earlier, fell to 9-6 overall. Muskego, which had several players from its state championship football team, improved to 10-4.
