Safety Committee Recommends Use of ATVs on Paved Streets to Village Board

CROSS PLAINS–The village’s Public Safety Committee recommended last week that all-terrain and utility-terrain vehicles be allowed on streets between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m. at speeds up to 15 mph.

A vote of residents attending the March 3 meeting showed that 12 approved and eight opposed the idea of allowing the four-wheeled vehicles to operate on streets within the village.

Village Board Member and Committee Chair Lori Zander said the intent of any proposed ordinance was to permit residents to operate ATVs “from to point A to point B,” as opposed to just aimless joyriding.

The committee developed discussion points for the Village Board to consider at its March 23 meeting. They included:

• Prohibited from operating on US 14 (Main St..), except to cross it

• A 15 mph speed limit

• Operators must be at least 16 years old, have valid driver’s license and ATV training

• Passengers under 18 must wear safety helmet

Cancellations, Precautions Take Place in Wake of Increased COVID-19 Cases

DANE COUNTY–Cancellations have been taking place around the county, and a Cross Plains school closed for cleaning after a parent learned they were exposed to COVID-19.

In addition, Gov. Tony Evers declared a public health emergency on March 12, in response to new cases of COVID-19, directing the Department of Health Services (DHS) to use all the resources necessary to respond to and contain the outbreak. Just this week, Wisconsin has had seven new cases and Illinois, Iowa and Minnesota have also seen increased cases. With these new cases there needs to be extensive contact tracing to contain the spread of COVID-19. Wisconsin also has 37 residents returning to the state from a Princess Cruise Ship who may have been exposed and need to be in monitored self quarantine for 14 days.

Also on Thursday, the Cross Plains Chamber of Commerce postponed their annual meeting planned for March 19. A new date has not been set for the event.

WIAA to restrict attendance at basketball tournaments

STEVENS POINT, Wis. – Middleton's girls basketball team will play in the WIAA Division 1 state tournament Friday and Saturday. But most fans will have to watch it on television.

The WIAA, in accordance with policies and guidance from public health organizations and the World Health Organization for mass gatherings, annpunced Thursday morning that it will be limiting attendance at the remainder of all winter tournament events scheduled March 12-14 and March 19-21.

The guidelines for mass gatherings calls for restriction of public events to 50-250 attendees, depending on the event and venue. This pandemic has created unprecedented circumstances that make these decisions and actions prudent and necessary.

Middleton rallies its way to state

MONONA — Thirteen. Nine. Five. One.

As their deficit kept shrinking, their energy kept rising. The noise inside Monona Grove High School rivaled a Metallica concert.

And Middleton’s girls basketball team — which has been the hunted throughout this magical season — was thriving in its new role as the hunter.

“As soon as we started chipping away, you could feel everything changing,” Cardinals senior forward Karina Bursac. “We knew if we just kept playing like that, we had ‘em.”

They sure did.

Middleton, which trailed Madison Memorial, 37-24, at halftime of its WIAA Division 1 sectional final last Saturday, opened the second half on a stunning 20-3 run. The Spartans battled back and forged ties at three different points, but the Cardinals used a late 6-0 run to post a thrilling 61-58 win.
