School Board Members Tour Schools Ahead of Reopen

MIDDLETON–Middleton Cross Plains Area School District (MCPASD) School Board members have been touring the district’s schools in the past week, including a tour of Kromrey Middle School on Jan. 28. The board has been learning about the protocols that will be put in place as schools return to in-person learning through hybrid models.

Kromrey Principal Dom Rick, Associate Principal Eric Engel, Dean of Students Brandon Tewalt and Kromrey school nurse Jenna Blizard led the small group through the school explaining the procedures that will be followed by students and staff during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The tour began with Ricks telling the board members, “This is a little bit of excitement for us,” referring the opening the school. He said that about 1,000 of Kromrey’s 1,200 students would be returning in two cohorts and that class size would be limited to 12-15 students per class.

Committee of the Whole Meets for Annual Retreat

MIDDLETON–The City of Middleton Committee of the Whole (COW), made up of the Common Council and Plan Commission, met for its annual retreat Jan. 30 to review the city’s ongoing major projects, TIF finance model, state of the real estate market and planning goals and strategies.

Planning and Zoning Administrator Mark Opitz said work on the airport master plan is resuming and will now include an environmental setting chapter which will review ways to reduce aircraft noise and improve air quality for residents living nearby. The city will survey city and town residents to review feedback. Once that is complete an open house can be scheduled, Opitz said. The goal is to complete the master plan by summer.

The North Mendota Trail long Century Avenue has remaining work, Opitz said, but he is confident the project can be completed within the $1.4 million budget. Once completed the trail will extend from Branch Street to the Highland Way traffic signals.

Federal Distribution Continues to Inhibit COVID-19 Vaccination

MADISON–No one was happy with the number of vaccines they received last week, Julie Willems Van Dijk, Wisconsin Department of Health (DHS) Deputy Secretary told a group of reports in a virtual press conference on Tuesday. Willems Van Dijk was referring to the distribution of COVID-19 vaccines to health care providers and health departments that requested nearly 300,000 doses.

“We could only fulfill 27 percent of their requests,” she said.

She reiterated that more vaccine is needed in the state and said that supply is one of three things needed to deliver vaccines, public demand and infrastructure to deliver the vaccines are the others. “We have public demand, and we have built the infrastructure to make vaccinating successful,” she explained, and said she knew waiting was difficult.

Boys basketball team opens with a win

WAUWATOSA — It had been 327 days since Middleton’s boys basketball team last took the court.

So when the Cardinals traveled to Wauwatosa Kingdom Prep last Wednesday, there was rust. There was inconsistency.

Amazingly, there was also a victory.

Middleton rallied from a deficit as big 10 points and posted a 49-46 win on its season-opener. Kayden Fosdick led a balanced Middleton scoring attack with nine points, while Matt Zimmerman added six.

Q’Andre Washington led the Wolfpack with 19 points and eight rebounds.

“This felt more like a scrimmage than a game,” Middleton coach Kevin Bavery said. “But it also just felt great to get back in the gym and have a chance to compete against somebody else.

“These are strange times when you have your first game of the year in January. But I thought we did some good things after kind of a sluggish start.”

Boys BB team falls to St. John's

DELAFIELD — St. John's NW Military Academy — located in Delafield — might be small in numbers.

The Lancers have just 140 students and will play in the WIAA Division 3 tournament this year.

Everything else about St. John’s is large, though.

The Lancers’ starting lineup averages 6-foot-6. Senior Bradin Podziemski is averaging 35 points per game and is being courted by several Division 1 high majors. And senior guard Brennan Timm averages 20.0 points per game and will likely play collegiately himself.

This is the challenge Middleton’s boys basketball team faced in just its second game of the season last Thursday.

The host Lancers got 26 points from Timm and another 23 from Podziemski and toppled the Cardinals, 71-56. Junior guard Logan Raffel led the Cardinals with 13 points, while junior guard Nick Meinholz added 10.

Swimmers set for state

Their season was truncated.

They had far less pool time than a regular campaign.

But several members of Middleton’s boys swimming team are back where they always wanted to be — state.

The Cardinals finished third at the WIAA Division 1 Middleton Sectional that was moved to Waukesha South last Saturday.

Sun Prairie won the seven-team sectional with 407 points, followed by Verona/Mount Horeb (358) and Middleton (303).

“This year's sectional was so unusual in so many different ways,” Middleton coach Danny Lynam said. “The obvious difference was the significantly shortened season, but even at the meet there was a limited crowd, the guys weren't allowed on deck to cheer each other on, and it was the first time we actually swam against anyone else in person.
