Former MHS star Molly (Toon) Lillard killed in murder-suicide

A member of one of Middleton’s most beloved families died tragically Sunday. Molly Elizabeth Lillard, who grew up here as Molly Toon, was shot to death by her husband in Scottsdale, Arizona, according to police.

She was 28 years old.

According to a statement issued by the Scottsdale Police Department, just prior to 5 p.m. on Sunday officers responded to reports of a shooting at a residence in the 8600 block of East Thornwood Drive. On arrival, officers discovered a female subject “to the front of the residence with obvious gunshot wounds.”

She was quickly extricated from the scene and transported to an area hospital. She did not survive her injuries.

Police said at the same time, it was learned that the male shooter, who was the victim’s husband, had gone back into the house. Barricade procedures were initiated by police.

Home, Sweet, Home

Well, it’s almost official–my husband, Matt, and I are soon to be homeowners once again. We are over the moon with excitement because we have been in a rental property for almost three years, and quite frankly, our landlord is the very definition of a slumlord. At one point I had water coming down from my ceiling and up through the basement floor. I was literally sandwiched in water.

We started looking for a house to buy in January 2020, just a couple of months before the Coronavirus lockdown began. That search was cut short for obvious reasons, but once we were all comfortable (us and the realtor) to meet again a couple of months ago, we resumed the search with much greater aggression.

Law Provides Stable Funding for Citizens Utility Board

MADISON–Gov. Tony Evers signed into law Assembly Bill (AB) 27, now Wisconsin Act 24, last week. The new law will provide a stable funding source for the Citizens Utility Board (CUB), Wisconsin’s only advocate for residential and small business utility customers. CUB is an independent, non-profit group that represents customers in rate case and utility construction proceedings before the Public Service Commission (PSC). Previously, CUB relied on funding from a PSC grant, which was subject to approval in Wisconsin’s biennial budget.

“Giving CUB the means to have a more equal footing in proceedings before the PSC results in greater representation for Wisconsin consumers, and ultimately leads to lower utility bills,” said Evers. “This law will ensure that CUB’s funding will be more stable and sustainable and will allow CUB to remain focused on its mission of advocating for Wisconsin families and small businesses who don’t have an army of attorneys at their disposal.”

MADISON–Gov. Tony Evers has appointed Kalvin D. Barrett as Dane County Sheriff on April 2. The appointment fills a vacancy created by Sheriff David J. Mahoney’s resignation, effective May 8, 2021. Barrett will complete the remainder of the term which ends January 2, 2023., said the governor.

City to Store Solar Generated Energy

MIDDLETON–The City of Middleton was awarded a state grant that will allow the electricity generated by solar panels on the roof of the Middleton Police Department Building to be stored in the building’s basement, the Public Service Commission (PSC) announced last week.

The city will use the $212,000 Energy Innovation Grant to purchase and install batteries that will store power from the 100-kilowatt solar installation on the roof of the biggest city-owned energy user, according to the grant application.

“(T)his will be our first battery storage project, but hopefully not the last,” Kelly Hilyard, the city’s sustainability coordinator wrote in an emailed reply to a reporter’s questions.

Middleton rallies past Verona

The adage that an elephant never forgets applied to the Middleton football team as it awaited last Thursday’s first of two meetings this season with the host Verona Wildcats.

The Cardinals still had nightmares of Verona running over, around and through Middleton’s toothless defense over a year ago, which hung around their collective necks like an albatross.

But it turns out that revenge was sweet as senior quarterback Sawyer Pertzborn ran for a six-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter and added a two-point conversion pass to senior tight end Bryce Hensen to rally Middleton for a thrilling 18-15 victory.

The Cardinals spoiled the debut game for the Wildcats in their new stadium. It also led to some back-and-forth trash talking as the game wound down that distressed both coaches.

Swimmers second at sectionals

Middleton girls’ swimming coach Lauren Cabalka has come to expect the unexpected.

After a shortened alternate fall season courtesy of the WIAA, created as a COVID-19 accommodation, the Cardinals were poised to compete at the state meet April 6 at Waukesha South High School.

Following a sixth-place finish at the WIAA Division 1 state meet in 2019, Middleton was again poised for a top 10 finish following a runner-up finish at the Verona/Eau Claire North Sectional.

“If you would have asked me three months ago, I would have said, no way. It’s not happening,” Cabalka said of the Cardinals competing in a state meet. “But as the season got underway, everything seemed to fall into place and seemed like it was only going to get better.

“This is such a great group of girls. They come in every day with a smile on their face. They walk out and say thank you. We’re excited and thankful that we get to swim (at state).”

Girls spikers headed to postseason

Charting the progress of the Middleton girls’ volleyball team became a little easier last week when the Cardinals met conference foes Janesville Parker and Sun Prairie for the second time this season.

Consider it a split decision, as Middleton (5-6 overall) swept Janesville Parker, 25-17, 25-8, 25-23, on March 30, but dropped a five-set match to Sun Prairie, 25-23, 23-25, 22-25, 27-25, 15-12, last Thursday to close out the week.

The Cardinals also opened the week on March 29 dropping three sets in a non-conference match to Edgerton, 25-17, 25-23, 25-15.

Despite going 1-2 on the week, Middleton coach Maddie Vogel was anything but disappointed, especially with the marathon match against perennial Big Eight Conference power Sun Prairie.
