City Council Discusses Plan to reopen City, Hybrid Meeting Model

MIDDLETON–The Middleton Common Council discussed a plan to reopen city buildings to the public and provide services and hold meetings in-person and continue a virtual option. The council directed staff to open city hall on June 7 and open all other city buildings by July 6.

The council did not approve a resolution to end the emergency order which allowed the move to virtual meetings at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. Mayor Gurdip Brar and some council members called for moving to a hybrid model of meetings continuing the use of Zoom to allow alders, committee members and the public to engage in meetings while not able to attend in-person.

VFW to Withdraw from GNF

MIDDLETON–After decades running a beer tent at the Good Neighbor Festival (GNF), the Middleton “Sonny” Simon VFW Post 8216 announced it would withdraw from the festival last week.

Citing concerns over safety and inclement weather, the VFW, who is a founding member of GNF in 1964 sent an email to the Times-Tribune outlining why they wanted to back out.

The organization is worried that the “open campus,” which would allowing alcohol on the entire grounds of the festival, will lend itself to underage drinking.

In an email signed “VFW Post 8216” the group said this idea has come up in previous years but stalled out, “The idea of allowing beer consumption across the Fest grounds (open campus) has come up in years past, prior to the current GNF Executive Committee (GNF) being seated. It was never implemented because of clearly identified increased risks and liabilities and the inability to adequately address those risks and liabilities.”

Commission Stalls on Longer Runway

MIDDLETON–Lengthening the main runway at the Middleton Municipal Airport-Morey Field garnered only a tie vote at last week’s Airport Commission meeting.

Mayor Gurdip Brar, an ex officio member of the commission, along with Alders Robert Burck and Luke Fuszard voted for the “no-build” option while chair John Hallick,

David Lorman and Kevin Munson voted for a 440-foot extension to the 4,000-foot runway. Michelle Bond, a citizen member, abstained.

Before passing their recommendations on to the Common Council, the Commission considered the final chapter (Design Alternatives) of the draft Airport Master Plan, a two-year-long process that has brought the airport’s problems and potential to the forefront of public debate.

Making a rare appearance at the commission, Brar said the airport was safely operating now and 93 percent of users polled were satisfied with the current runway length.

Baseball Cards earn No. 3 seed

The road will be daunting, formidable.

Middleton’s baseball team certainly seems poised, though, to make a postseason run.

The Cardinals won four straight games last week and have now won 10 of 11 overall. And with the WIAA Division 1 playoffs set to begin Tuesday, Middleton (15-7 overall, 11-4 in the Big Eight) figures to be a remarkably tough out.

The Cardinals received the No. 3 seed in their half of the sectional and will host sixth-seeded Madison East in a regional semifinal June 15. The winner of that game will face either second-seeded DeForest or seventh-seeded Madison West in a regional final on June 17.

The regional includes top-seeded Madison Memorial, followed by DeForest, Middleton, Verona, Waunakee, Madison East and Madison West.

Sectionals are June 21 in Baraboo.

Softball Cardinals hit rough patch

It was a rough week for the Middleton Cardinals softball team that still has aspirations of winning at least a share of their first Big Eight Conference title since 2015.

But the task became much tougher after Middleton lost two of three games last week.

Freshman pitcher Tayler Baker scattered seven hits and struck out seven and also had three hits, including a double, to power visiting Sun Prairie to an 11-3 victory over Middleton in a Big Eight Conference game last Friday at Firefighters’ Park.

“We made her look pretty good,” Middleton manager Brittany Karl said of Baker. “I think it was on us for not making adjustments. We knew what she was throwing right out of the gate, and we just didn’t adjust to it. We made some adjustments in the fifth inning, but you can’t wait so long.”

Earlier in the week, Middleton defeated Janesville Parker 7-3 on June 1 and suffered a heart-breaking 7-6 loss at home to Parker on June 3.
