Tennis Cardinals win Big 8 title

The first goal has been accomplished.

Now, Middleton’s boys tennis team will take at their other objectives.

The Cardinals clinched the Big Eight Conference last week with a perfect 9-0 record. Middleton defeated Sun Prairie, Madison La Follette and Janesville Parker by identical 7-0 scores.

“For the last few conference matches we played this week, we knew that we would be the favored team,” Middleton coach Tony Mirasola said. “But it was important that we came out and were focused and energized at every position.”

Middleton did exactly that, as it completed its romp through the league.

Here’s a recap of the Cardinals’ week:

• Middleton 7, Sun Prairie 0 — Koji Heineman, Jonathan Kim, Ian Connell and Aarush Gupta all rolled to singles wins for Middleton on June 1.

On the doubles side, Middleton’s top team of Gene Kim and Kieran Gopal posted a 3-6, 6-2, 10-6 win over Sun Prairie’s Erik Spence and Kyle Helmenstine.

Track teams shine at Sun Prairie

Their regular season is now in the rearview mirror.

The postseason awaits, and both Middleton track and field teams are excited about what lies ahead.

Middleton’s girls finished second at the six-team Paul Frank Invite hosted by Sun Prairie last Friday. Sun Prairie won the event with 146 points, while Middleton was a close second at 140.

Sun Prairie also won the boys meet with 156 points, while Verona (141) and Middleton (135.5) rounded out the top three.

“Without a conference meet to cap the end of season before the tournament schedule, the last two invites have been great for the kids,” said Middleton girls coach Jay Schweitzer said. “I think our finishes in both meets show the girls would be very competitive in a conference meet and I would like their chances. I'm very proud of the team’s development and performances.”

On the girls’ side, Kobi Davis won the shot put and Maddilyn Vander Sanden was third. Davis also won the discus.

Soccer Cards hope for playoff run

Mary Duffy knows the challenges that await are immense.

Middleton’s girls soccer coach, though, likes that her team is entering the postseason with a two-game winning streak.

The Cardinals received the No. 5 seed in their half of the WIAA Division 1 sectional and began the playoffs Tuesday with a regional semifinal contest at Verona. The winner of that game advanced to a regional final Saturday at top-seeded Waunakee.

The sectional semifinals are June 17 and the sectional finals are June 19.

When Middleton and Verona met last month, they played in a downpour and through heavy winds. The Wildcats won that contest, 5-3.

“With any luck, we can play under and blue sky instead of piercing wind and rain, work together with our team defense and create our dangerous attack,” Duffy said. “It should be a good match up with two quality teams playing in the first game of the postseason instead of the second game.”

Middleton golfers storm to state

Forgive Middleton freshman Charlie Jambor for experiencing a few jitters prior to his opening tee shot early Monday morning.

As someone who had been alternating between varsity and junior varsity boys golf all season, Jambor was just hoping to contribute in the Cardinals’ biggest event of the season, the WIAA Division 1 Madison Memorial sectional at Blackhawk Country Club in Madison.

It’s no secret that the perennial state-contending Cardinals routinely start a varsity five who are all capable of shooting in the 70s. Expectations are high. The competition just to make the varsity squad is fierce.

And Jambor, who entered with an 85.25 average in four events for the young Cardinals, earned the fifth spot earlier in the week by winning a 36-hole qualifier by one shot.

“I was a little nervous,” Jambor admitted. “My legs were noodles, basically. But as soon as I hit it and it was where I wanted it to be I was pretty excited.”

Take in Nature and History at Dane County Parks

DANE COUNTY–Whether you are interested in the geological wonders of this area of Wisconsin or are just looking to spend time out in nature, county and state parks, as well as the Ice Age Trail, provide well-preserved places to enjoy the natural beauty of the region on foot.

Wisconsin has a diverse selection of terrains due to glaciers advancing into many, but not all, parts of the state. Dane County and the surrounding areas are especially varied, straddling the line of the Laurentide Ice Sheet’s furthest advance into this area before its retreat 18,000 years ago.

That means the parks in this area offer something for everyone, from strenuous hikes to gentle walks. Here are a few nearby places to hike in the warmer months ahead:

People Ride Horses Again

My seven-year-old daughter came home and told me she had a crush on someone at school. She added that a different classmate had a crush on her. The situation, she explained, was quite complicated.

Three days later, she walked up to me and said, “Dad, I have a question: What’s a crush?”

It was yet another reminder that life is experienced by those who do not understand it in real time. Much of the profundity and meaning in the moments we share only reveals itself later, with the lucidity of hindsight, often on a page or in a song. When things are actually happening, our most common sentiment is: “Huh?”

I like to think I sometimes enjoy little glimpses through the veil, into the true heart of what it means to be human. But these always come after the fact. I never realize how special a small moment is until it is gone, when I can look back on it and see just how immense it really was.

Commission Approves Update to Art Plan

MIDDLETON–The City of Middleton Plan Commission approved an update to the city’s master plan for public art and design put forward by the Middleton Arts Committee. The update to the plan outlines realistic and short term action goals for the city to promote, create and maintain public art.

In 2009, the city approved the original Master Plan for Public Art & Design which provided a 20 year vision for public art and design and identified several sites for public art, as well as a suggested timeline and a budget mechanism for implementing projects.

While progress has been made implementing the plan a lack of funding has been a barrier for several projects.

The update which will be added as an addendum to the master plan lays out five overarching goals.

Goal one includes supporting local artists and economic development goals through public art, as well as leaving visitors with a positive impression.

Library Board Proposes Closing Friends Bookstore

MIDDLETON–Friends of the Middleton Public Library treasurer Dan Olson and board member Tim Graham said they were surprised at a proposal by the Middleton Public Library Board to close the bookstore run by the Friends and housed inside the library building.

The men said they knew space constraints were a problem for the library, and when the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) agreement was discussed at the library board’s May meeting, they expected space might be reduced, but were surprised that the board wants to close the store altogether.

We understand this is their decision,” said Olson, “we’re disappointed, but it is their decision.”

“I wish there had been more upfront communication,” added Graham.
