Middleton High School's DECA competitors.

It was a record-setting day for the MHS DECA students at the District 3 Conference on Saturday, Jan. 12 in Sun Prairie.

Seventeen MHS students were named series champions, DECA adviser Bob Hutchison said. For comparison, five students were series champions a year ago. In all, 38 MHS students competed.

The students performed role plays based on scenarios they would encounter if they had a job in marketing. The students also took multiple choice tests to measure their knowledge on marketing and economic concepts.

Students won medals based on their performance on the tests and role plays. The judges gave medals to the top two students in each role play, while medals were given to the top 20 percent on tests.

The MHS series champions were:

Kirstin Kravik and Bennett Miyagawa – 1st place in Marketing Communication Team Event; Marissa Nelson and Steph Reiss – 1st place in Business Law Team Event; Shannon Murphy and Julie Rickert – 2nd place in Marketing Communication Team Event; Kate Degler and Jocyln Tiedt – 2nd place in Buying and Merchandising Team Event; Colin Masnica and Tristan Schultz – 2nd place in Financial Services Team Event; Madeline Guyette – 2nd place in Hotel and Lodging Management; Tristan Freides – 3rd place in Automotive Services Marketing; Jack Mayers – 4th place in Sports Marketing Individual Series; Brandon Olstad and Brian Keenan – 4th place in Business Law Team Event; Emily Cottingham and Krysta Quale – 4th place in Hospitality Team Event.

Meanwhile, eight more MHS students received honorable mention: Andrea Green and Abby Hudson (apparel and accessories); Ivraj Seerha (human resources/finance); Fiona Ljumani (restaurant management); Leah Meylor and Seeham Bnyat (travel and tourism team event); and Akash Pattnaik and Tim O’Shea (sports marketing team event).

MHS students won 60 medals in all.

“Our students definitely came prepared to compete,” said Hutchinson, an MHS teacher who is in his 11th year advising the DECA program. “It’s the most successful showing by MHS DECA since I’ve been here.”

Hutchison said 23 students advance to the state competition, which is March 18-21 at Grand Geneva Resort and Spa in Lake Geneva. Students who place in the top six in their series at state automatically qualify for nationals, which are April 24-27 in Anaheim, Calif.

Distributive Education Clubs of America (DECA) has been around for more than 60 years and has more than 185,000 student members in 5,000 high schools. DECA prepares emerging leaders and entrepreneurs for careers in marketing, finance, hospitality and management in high schools and colleges around the globe.
