Calling it “doing our due diligence,” the Middleton Town Board has asked staff to explore alternatives to contracting with Middleton Emergency Medical Service, including Ryan Brothers Ambulance.

While the town has contracted with Middleton EMS for decades the increasing cost, lack of timely information and Ryan Brothers new Middleton location prompted the board to seek options, said Town Chairman Milo Breunig.

“I won’t call it shopping around,” Breunig said last week. “It’s like looking at our engineering services; we just want to make sure the residents are getting the most of their money.”

Two years ago, the Middleton EMS contract “took a huge hike” to about $182,000 annually billed in quarterly installments, said Breunig.

Meanwhile, information on the number of service calls involving town residents has been “hard to get,” he said.

While the Middleton EMS Commission is supposed to meet quarterly, “we’re lucky to get annual meetings,” said Breunig.

The quality of service Middleton EMS provides hasn’t been a problem, said Breunig, but now Ryan Bros. Market St. location in Middleton, and their acquiring municipal clients makes them worth contacting.

A call to Middleton EMS Director Steve Wunsch on Friday wasn’t returned before deadline.

Middleton EMS is a department of the city of Middleton. It is the exclusive 911 advanced life support ambulance provider for a designated geographical response territory that includes the city of Middleton, town of Middleton, and a portion of the town of Springfield, according to its website.

Town Administrator David Shaw said Middleton EMS provides emergency and non-emergency medical transport for town residents and Ryan Bros. would be contacted to learn what training and certifications their staff has and at what cost could they provide the services the town has been receiving.

“Quality of service is a huge thing. We’ll talk to Ryan’s customers to make sure they’re happy with them,” Breunig said.

Information received will be used by the town board in awarding a contract for emergency medical services next year, he said.
