As the rains poured down and the winds gusted throughout the morning Tuesday, Middleton girls track and field coach Tara Franklin had one overriding thought.

“I wasn't sure if we would even finish the meet before midnight,” Franklin said of the WIAA Division 1 Middleton regional.

But much to the Cardinals’ delight the weather cleared. Then Middleton proceeded to put on a show.

Middleton’s boys cruised to the regional title with 155 points, easily outdistancing runner-up Monona Grove (98.0). Sun Prairie (90.5), Madison West (90) and Madison Memorial (72) rounded out the top five.

“I think we're happy to be moving so many guys through to the next level,” Middleton coach Isaac Mezera said. “Now the focus is getting as many to the red track (state) as possible.”

Sun Prairie won the girls’ title with 160 points, while Middleton was second at 142. Madison Memorial (90.5), Waunakee (81) and Monona Grove (78.5) rounded out the top five.

“As the winds blew and changed, and the clouds occasionally broke open to let the sun shine through, (we) performed very well,” Franklin said.

The top four finishers in each event advanced to Friday’s WIAA Division 1 Holmen Sectional.

Middleton junior Perrin Hagge was a double winner, capturing the 800- and 1,600-meter runs.
Hagge won the 800 in 1:57.70, while teammate Zach Shoemaker-Allen was a close second (1:58.94). Hagge also won the 1,600 in 4:23.67, more than four seconds ahead of runner-up Olin Hacker of Madison West (4:27.73).

Cardinals’ senior Nnamdi Okoli won the 100-yard dash (11.18) and was second in the 200 (22.93).

“Perrin and Nnamdi had strong nights,” Mezera said. “They will be the backbone of our team moving forward.”

Middleton junior Jack Jesse won the long jump (22-1 ½), while teammate Micah Riffenberg was third (20-0).

Middleton junior Jordan Futch was second in the 400 (51.59), while sophomore Gus Newcomb was second in the 3,200 (9:43.75). Senior Brett Joers was second in the 110-meter hurdles (16.54) and third in the 300 hurdles (43.29).

Cardinals senior Noah Meeteer was second in the pole vault (13-0), while senior Nick Maes was third in the triple jump (41-5 ¾). And Middleton’s Nick Bilodeau was fourth in the 100 (11.78).

Middleton’s 1,600-meter relay team of senior Travis Zander, senior Zach Easton, Shoemaker-Allen and junior Griffin Gussell was first (3:29.48).

The Cardinals’ 3,200-meter relay team of Waleffe, junior Cole Conklin-Little, sophomore Ryan Madoch and Futch was first (8:15.05). And Middleton’s 400-meter relay team of senior Alex Wood, Meeteer, sophomore Trevaun Turner and Bilodeau was second (44.22).

On the girls’ side, junior Lauren Smith won the 100-meter hurdles (15.82) and the triple jump (36-4 ½). Senior Bobbi Patrick won the 800 (2:22.93), while junior Sam Valentine captured the 1,600 (5:22.75).

Sophomore Madeline Pflasterer-Jennerjohn won the pole vault with a personal-best mark of 9’6”, while teammate Betsy Hathaway was fourth (8’6”).

“The great surprise was Madeline Pflasterer-Jennerjohn winning the pole vault with a P.R.” Franklin said. “She has really put it all together in the past few meets and her form is looking so good. I see her doing great things in this event in the future.”

Freshman Marie Mayers was second in the 300-meter hurdles (49.65) and teammate Madeline Ace was fourth (50.78).

Junior Hailee Milton was third in the 200 (27.77) and senior Audrey Hinshaw was fourth (28.15).

Middleton’s relay teams also had a memorable night, winning all four events.

The quartet of senior Hanna Docter, junior Hanne Anderson-Smith, junior Olivia Roberts and Lauren Smith won the 400-meter relay. Hanne Anderson-Smith, Milton, Docter and Lauren Smith combined to win the 800-meter relay.

Hanne Anderson-Smith, senior Emily Zeker, Docter and Patrick combined to win the 1,600-meter relay. And the quartet of Valentine, Wians, Patrick and sophomore Alyssa Lemirande won the 3,200-meter relay.
