The word drought didn’t sit well with the head coach.

But whatever you choose to call it, Franco Marcos is ready for it to end.

Marcos, who coaches Middleton’s girls volleyball team, has built one of the state’s top programs. But the Cardinals have gone five straight seasons without a trip to the WIAA Division 1 state tournament.

The way Marcos sees it, there’s no time like the present.

“I think that this group could get us back to state this year,” said Marcos, whose team begins the season Saturday at the Wisconsin Rapids Lincoln Invite. “We have had a pattern of going to state for two consecutive and reloading for six. Following that trend would indicate that these next two years should be our time again. We are working to make it happen.”

Senior outside hitter Logan Welti will lead the Cardinals this season. Welti was a first-team all-Big Eight Conference last season after leading the Cardinals with 389 kills amd finishing second in blocks (52), digs (282) and aces (52).

“Logan Welti will be our go to outside hitter and will also fill in as one of our setters,” Marcos said. “She’s the most experienced player on the court and she will be leading the team on and off the court.”

The Cardinals have seven other returnees, as well.

Senior Meghan Bayer played middle blocker last year and will add right side hitter to her duties this fall.

“She has improved a ton both defensively and on offense,” Marcos said.

Senior Morgan Roberts will be the Cardinals’ libero, while senior Elizabeth Keller will be one of Middleton’s setters, as well as an outside hitter.

Senior middle blocker Molly Zeineman will anchor the middle, while senior Gabie Buechner will be a right side hitter.

Junior Jessi Nonn is a defensive specialist, while junior Andrina McNamer will be a back up middle blocker.

Middleton also welcomes a gifted crop of newcomers.

Freshman outside hitter Lily Welti is expected to play a major role from day one and should team with Logan Welti to form one of the top sister combinations in the state.

“Lily will be a starting outside hitter,” Marcos said. “She is a freshman and ready to go. She will be another go-to player with her sister.”

Junior Mimi McMurray will be one of Middleton’s setters, while sophomore Jennifer McGinnis will be an outside hitter.

Freshman Hannah Flottmeyer is a promising middle blocker that will see playing time in her first year. Junior defensive specialists Sara Wettstein and Olivia Nyffeler, and junior setter/right side hitter Maddie Dagitz should also be key contributors, as well.

“We will be contenders for the Big Eight Conference title,” Marcos said. “Winning sectionals is high on our list. Just getting to state is not all. We are working toward contending for a state title.”
