Middleton’s girls volleyball has high hopes and great expectations this season.

The Cardinals also discovered last weekend they have a lot of work to do if they hope to eventually achieve great things.

Middleton finished in third place at the Wisconsin Rapids Lincoln Invite. The Cardinals went 3-2 overall on the day.

“It was a great tournament format to see everyone in action,” Middleton coach Franco Marcos said. “At a given point we had two freshmen and a sophomore on the court.

“Overall, our serving was good, our offense was inconsistent and our defense needs work. However, that is to be expected with new setters and a number of players playing next to each other for the first time. There was some lack of communication on defensive plays that hurt us and those will be corrected.”

Middleton opened with a 25-13, 25-11 win over Wisconsin Rapids.

Gabi Buechner led the way with 13 kills in 18 attempts for a sensational hitting percentage of .611. Molly Zeinemann had three blocks, while Logan Welti and Lily Welti both had two aces. Morgan Roberts had six digs and Elizabeth Keller added 15 assists.

The Cardinals then cruised past Colby, 25-11, 25-10.

Logan Welti and Buechner both had five kills, while Lily Welti and Zeinemann each had four kills. Meghan Bayer had four blocks and Zeinemann had three blocks. Lily Welti had 3 aces, Roberts had five digs and Keller had 13 assists.

Medford then upended Middleton, 26-28, 25-16, 15-8.

Logan Welti had six kills and 16 digs, while Roberts had two aces. Lily Welti had five kills, Buechner had four kills and 2 1/2 blocks, Bayer had 2 1/2 blocks and Keller had 15 assists.

“Their defense was great,” Marcos said of Medford. “They dug us well and we committed a lot of hitting errors.”

Fox Valley Lutheran then defeated Middleton in the first round of the playoffs, 25-23, 9-25, 15-11.

Logan Welti had three aces, five kills and five digs, while Lily Welti had two aces, four kills and four digs. Jennifer McGinnis had two aces, three kills and two blocks, while Bayer had 3 1/2 blocks and Keller had 12 assists and four digs.

“We did not put them away in the first set and it cost us an opportunity to get to the finals,” Marcos said. “After losing the first set, we came out strong and took care of business. However, we came up short in the third set.”

Middleton then defeated Laconia in the third place match, 25-23, 25-13.

Roberts had five aces and Mimi McMurray had eight assists. Logan Welti had seven kills and four digs, Lily Welti had six kills and Bayer had four kills.

“We have lots of fine tuning to do,” Marcos said.

• On deck: Middleton opens Big Eight Conference play Thursday at Janesville Parker at 6:30 p.m. The Cardinals are then at the Mukwonago Invite Saturday.
