Middleton’s girls volleyball team finished fourth at last Saturday’s Menomonee Falls Invite.

The Cardinals opened the day with a 25-21, 25-9 win over Bayport. Logan Welti had seven kills and seven digs, Elizabeth Keller had two aces and 10 assists, and Lily Welti had six kills.

“We started a little slow and changed gears as the match went on,” Middleton coach Franco Marcos said.

The Cardinals then defeated Kettle Moraine Lutheran, 22-25, 25-15, 15-10. Lily Welti had nine kills, Jessi Nonn had three aces, while Logan Welti had five kills and two aces. Keller added two aces and 25 assists, Meghan Bayer had seven kills, and both Gabie Buechner and Molly Zeinemann had four kills.

Middleton then finished pool play with a 25-20, 28-26 loss to Greendale.

Lily Welti had eight kills, Logan Welti had five kills and Bayer had four kills. Mimi McMurray added 10 assists and Nonn had two aces.

“It was a great match where we need to continue to work on finishing the task at hand,” Marcos said.

In the first round of the playoffs, the Cardinals lost to Menomonee Falls, 25-13, 25-16.

Logan Welti had four kills, Jennifer McGinnis had three kills, and Zeinemann, Bayer and Buechner each had two kills.    

“We were still in lunch mode and could not get much going,” Marcos said. 

Germantown then defeated Middleton 13-25, 25-15, 16-14, in the third place match.

Lily Welti led Middleton with three aces and seven kills, while Nonn had two aces. Welti had eight kills, Bayer had five kills and Keller had 19 assists. 

“This was a match with lots of momentum changes, which you will find with two evenly matched teams,” Marcos said. “It was a great match and a decent performance overall.”

Middleton also notched a pair of Big Eight Conference wins last week.

The Cardinals defeated Madison Memorial, 21-25, 25-18, 25-21, 27-25, last Tuesday.

Logan Welti led Middleton with three aces, 10 kills and 21 digs, while Lily Welti had eight aces, six kills and six digs. Elizabeth Keller had four aces and 27 assists, Morgan Roberts had eight digs and Bayer had eight kills and 3.5 blocks.

“It was a battle and we prevailed,” Marcos said. “We could not stop their two big guns, but our tough serves were the difference in the match.”

Middleton also toppled Madison West last Thursday on Senior Night, 25-19, 25-17, 25-19.

Keller led the Cardinals with four aces and 24 assists, while Logan Welti had two aces, eight kills and nine digs. Bayer had three aces, eight kills and two blocks, Zeinemann had two aces, six kills and three blocks, and Buechner had nine kills and eight digs.

• On deck: Middleton was at Beloit Memorial Tuesday, then is at Janesville Craig Thursday at 6:30 p.m.

The WIAA Division 1 postseason seeding meeting is Sunday.

“I am expecting anywhere between a fifth and a seventh seed based on our performance and the teams in the sectional that beat us,” Marcos said.
