The second season is here.

And Middleton’s girls volleyball team hopes to be a team that surprises.

The Cardinals earned the No. 5 seed in their sectional and host 12th-seeded Baraboo Thursday at 7 p.m. in a regional semifinal.

If Middleton defeats the Thunderbirds, it meets either fourth-seeded Monona Grove or 13th-seeded La Crosse Central Saturday in a regional final.

The sectional semifinals are Oct. 29 and the sectional finals are Oct. 31.

“We are refining our game and believe that cutting down on our unforced errors will help us advance to the next round,” Middleton coach Franco Marcos said. “We are not going to take Baraboo lightly.

“I have seen them play and they take advantage of any opportunity they get. We need to bring our ‘A’ game the rest of the way. Everyone needs to contribute in order for us to continue this journey.”

The Cardinals finished the regular season by going 3-3 at the Big Eight Conference tournament last Saturday.

Middleton opened with a 25-11, 26-28, 16-14 win over Madison La Follette.

Logan Welti had 14 kills and 22 digs, while Lily Welti had 10 kills and five digs. Meghan Bayer had eight kills and four blocks, while Elizabeth Keller had 26 assists and two aces.

The Cardinals then cruised past Madison East, 15-6, 25-3. Lily Welti had 11 aces and Jessi Nonn had five aces.

Middleton then bested Janesville Parker, 25-19, 25-14. Lily Welti had four aces, six kills and seven digs, while Mimi McMurray had two aces and nine assists. Morgan Roberts added 12 digs, and Logan Welti had two aces, seven kills and 10 digs.

Sun Prairie then toppled Middleton in the final match of pool play, 25-19, 25-19.

Logan Welti led Middleton with eight kills and eight digs, and Elizabeth Keller had 18 assists.

In the semifinals, Verona toppled the Cardinals, 25-14, 25-18.

Logan Welti had eight kills, three digs and two aces, while Lily Welti had four kills and five digs. Keller added 15 assists.

Madison Memorial then downed Middleton, 25-17, 25-21, in the third place match.

“Our productivity was very low this match,” Marcos said.
