So much for a happy holiday.

Middleton’s girls basketball team went to the Christine Rathke Tournament in Franklin undefeated and ranked No. 1 in the state.

The Cardinals then lost two of three and settled for seventh place at the eight-team tournament.

“We’re a little concerned about our defense and press rotations,” Middleton coach Jeff Kind said. “We got what we wanted by facing very good competition and got a taste of some more physical play.

“Offensively, we didn’t shoot particularly well in any of the games. That may have been partially due to the defense and physical games, but we were getting shots we normally make.”

Middleton opened the tournament with a heartbreaking 73-65 loss to Germantown last Monday. The Cardinals held a 65-60 lead late in the game, but the Warhawks scored the final 13 points of the game to prevail.

“We made some bad decisions on shot selection and defensive gambles,” Kind said. “We’ll learn from that, but we need to get back to some press basics and defensive fundamentals.”

Middleton led, 36-33, at halftime only to see its lead evaporate in the second half.

Junior guard Bria Lemirande led the Cardinals with 18 points. Junior guard Alexis Thomas added 15 points and junior guard Alyssa Lemirande had 13 points.

Middleton also struggled in an 80-69 loss to Milwaukee King last Tuesday. The Cardinals opened by missing 15 of their first 16 shots and never could recover.

Junior guard Carlee Lemirande led Middleton with 14 points. Thomas added 14 points and Alyssa Lemirande had 12 points.

“We never really got out of the hole we put ourselves in,” Kind said.

Middleton did rebound last Wednesday with an 82-59 win over Racine Case. Alyssa Lemirande led the Cardinals with 20 points, while Thomas added 17. Carlee Lemirande chipped in with eight points and Bria Lemirande added seven.

Middleton followed that up with a 74-24 win over Madison West last Saturday. Alyssa Lemirande led a balanced effort with 17 points, while Alexis Thomas, Katherine Hibner and Hannah Flottmeyer both added nine.

“I have confidence in our ability to learn from the experience and in our resilience as we come back to conference play,” Kind said.
