Their scores are coming down.

Progress is being made.

And Middleton’s boys golf team is starting to show they can be a force over the final month of the season.

The Cardinals finished second at the 12-team Morgan Stanley Shootout last Thursday. Middleton then was third at the 18-team Onalaska Invite last Friday and second at the 10-team Sparta Invite last Saturday.

Middleton fired its lowest score of the year — a 321 — on its way to a second-place finish at the Morgan Stanley Invite held at University Ridge Golf Course.

Madison Edgewood won the event with a 306, followed by Middleton (321), Verona (326), Madison Memorial (327) and Sun Prairie (328).

Andy Zucker led the Cardinals with a 79, while Colin Butler carded an 80. Both Brett Wipfli and Ross Johnson added 81s.

“I was pleased with our play,” Middleton coach Tom Cabalka said. “We really haven't had a player that has gone low this season, so for us to be successful we have to get four scores like we did here.”

The Cardinals then played extremely well at the Onalaska Invite.

Milwaukee Marquette won the tournament with a 311, while Madison Edgewood (318), Middleton (326), Homestead (327) and Menomonee Falls (336) rounded out the top five.

Wipfli led Middleton with a 79 and Zucker shot an 80. Johnson carded an 83, while Henry Taylor shot an 84 that included a 39 on the back nine.

“Again I was pleased with the play, especially Henry Taylor's back nine,” Cabalka said. “That was his best nine hole (score) since his freshman year.”

Middleton ended its week with an impressive performance at the Sparta Invite.

Sparta won its own invite with a 317, while Middleton was second at 331. Marshfield (332), Reedsburg (342) and Baraboo (348) rounded out the top five.

Wipfli and Johnson both shot 81s to lead Middleton. Zucker carded an 83 and Taylor shot an 86.

“It was very cold and windy,” Cabalka said. “Sparta played extremely well on their home course.

“The guys had trouble going from really good green speed at La Crosse Country Club to Sparta's very slow greens. We have to continue to manage ourselves better on the course and turn our doubles into bogeys.”

• On deck: Middleton was at the Waukesha South Invite held at Bristlecone Pines Country Club in Hartland on Tuesday.

The Cardinals then head to the Sun Prairie Triangular Thursday at Sun Prairie Country Club Thursday at 2 p.m. Middleton then meets Madison La Follette May 8 at 2 p.m. at Yahara Golf Course.
