It’s been an up and down spring for Middleton’s track and field teams.

But with the meat of the schedule finally here, the Cardinals are peaking at the right time.

Middleton’s boys finished in third place at last Saturday’s Myhrum Invitational held at Hartland Arrowhead. The Cardinals’ girls were sixth out of 21 teams.

The Myhrum Invite features many of the state’s top teams and athletes, and many years, provides a preview of the state tournament.

“As a coaching staff we were absolutely thrilled on how it turned out,” Middleton’s boys coach Joe Line said. “This is the meet where we put the athletes in their best events.”

And the results were impressive — to say the least.

Host Arrowhead won the boys title with 89.5 points. Fond du Lac was second (78), while Middleton (74), Oak Creek (63) and Mukwonago (52) rounded out the top five.

Middleton senior Gus Newcomb won the 3,200-meter run (9:19.19), while junior Jack Rader was sixth (9:37.68) and freshman Roman Ystenes was ninth (9:45.92).

Junior Aaron Richardson was second in the long jump (21-5) and senior Austin Delaney was fourth (21-1).

Middleton sophomore Caleb Easton was third in the 800-meter run (1:59.32), while senior Ryan Madoch was fourth (1:59.98) and sophomore Michael Madoch was sixth (2:00.64).

Cardinals senior Tre Turner was fourth in the triple jump (41-3 ¼) and sixth in the 200-meter dash (23.01). Senior Jack Toennies was sixth in the 110-meter high hurdles (15.83), while senior Jackson Grimm was eighth in the triple jump (40-1).

Middleton junior Sam Jaeger was seventh in the 1,600 (4:31.48) and Michael Madoch was 10th (4:33.25). Junior Jake Lamers was 10th in the 300-meter hurdles (43.29).

Middleton’s 3,200-meter relay team of Newcomb, freshman Braedon Gilles, Easton and Jaeger was second (8:16.88). The Cardinals’ 800-meter relay team of freshman Joey Kean, senior Anthony Gatlin, junior Aaron Richardson and Turner was third (1:31.40).

Middleton’s 400-meter relay team of Turner, Richardson, Kean and Gatlin was sixth (44.13). And the Cardinals’ 1,600-meter relay team of senior Brendon Martin, senior Noah Roberson, senior Ryan Madoch and Lamers was sixth (3:34.21).

“Tre Turner did four events and scored in all four,” Line said. “Aaron Richardson did the same, while Gus Newcomb ran a great 3,200 and looks great coming into the conference meet.

“The 4x800 team had a solid finish and got second place. Our (800-meter relay) team is putting up times that can place at state.

“We are extremely proud of our athletes as all their hard work is paying off. We have a little more work to do in some events, but we feel we are ready to make a run at another conference championship.”

On the girls’ side, Middleton senior Madeline Pflasterer-Jennerjohn won the pole vault (11-0) and senior Betsy Hathaway was sixth (10-0). Pflasterer-Jennerjohn also won the long jump (17-2 ¼), while junior Jennifer McGinnis was fourth in the triple jump (34-2 ¼).

“Madeline Pflasterer-Jennerjohn was close to breaking two school records,” Middleton girls coach Cory Christnovich said. “Her leap of 17'2.25" is a personal best and is 4 ½ inches short of the school record held since 2003. She also went 11'0" in the pole vault, which is a personal best and is three inches short of the school record.”

Sophomore Tai Pritts finished seventh in the 100-meter dash (12.80) and senior Molly Hoferle was eighth in the 3,200 meter run (12:10.41).

Senior Alyssa Lemirande was ninth in the high jump (4-8), while junior Marie Meyers was 10th in the 300-meter hurdles (49.74).

Middleton’s 3,200-meter relay team of senior Madeline Ace, Lemirande, sophomore Hadley Braaten and junior Charlotte Sue was third (10:05.99). The Cardinals’ 1,600-meter relay team of junior Juliana Castillo, Lemirande, Mayers and Braaten was fourth .

Middleton’s 800-meter relay team of junior Autumn Delaney, McGinnis, Castillo and Braaten was sixth (1:49.35).

“Marie Mayers ran a personal best in both the 300 hurdles as well as her split in the 4x400,” Christnovich said. “She has really worked hard this year and I expect her times to continue to drop dramatically in both of these races.

“Hadley Braaten showed off her versatility. She is a tough lady and has worked really hard this season so it is great to see her times coming down. Sitori Tanin … ran personal bests in both the trials and finals of the 100 high hurdles, and won the event.  You can see her gaining more confidence every day in that event.

“Overall it was a great weekend for our team. This sets us up well to continue to improve for the conference meet coming up on Friday.”

• On deck: Middleton is at the Big Eight Conference meet Friday at Mansfield Stadium beginning at 3:30 p.m.
