Two down. Two to go.

That’s what Middleton’s girls volleyball team is hoping.

The Cardinals rolled to a WIAA Division 1 regional championship last week.

First, fourth-seeded Middleton defeated 13th-seeded Tomah, 25-17, 25-17, 23-25, 25-12, in a regional semifinal last Thursday. The Cardinals then toppled fifth-seeded Monona Grove, 16-25, 28-26, 25-20, 25-21, in a regional final last Saturday.

Middleton now hosts top-seeded Sun Prairie in a sectional semifinal Thursday at 5 p.m. Sun Prairie defeated Middleton, 3-0, when the teams met back in September.

The winner will meet either second-seeded Verona or third-seeded Waunakee in a sectional final Saturday at 7 p.m. in Baraboo.

“We played Sun Prairie the first week of conference play,” Middleton coach Franco Marcos said. “Our line-up has undergone major adjustments since then.”

Middleton’s lineup performed awfully well at regionals.

In the Cardinals’ win over Tomah, Jennifer McGinnis had three aces, 12 kills and 10 digs, while Reagan Thomas had four aces and Olivia Farin had 12 digs. Hannah Flottmeyer had five kills and three blocks, while Kayla Underwood had 20 assists.

Cami Spellman had four kills and two blocks, Ashley Harris had two aces and 12 assists and Taylor Byington had 2.5 blocks.

Middleton followed that with an impressive win over Monona Grove.

Keller Frinzi had six kills, while McGinnis had two aces, five kills and 17 digs. Harris had two aces and 11 assists, while Thomas had three aces.

Farin had one ace and 16 digs, while Underwood had two aces, 15 assists and nine digs.   Taylor Byington had five blocks and Flottmeyer had nine kills and four blocks.

“It was a good match,” Marcos said. “We started slow and picked it up as the match went on. However, it was too close for comfort.”

Middleton now has the daunting task of facing Sun Prairie, which has been to the state tournament three times since 2012 and reached the state semifinals last year. Middleton, on the other hand, is gunning for its first trip to state since 2009.

“We committed numerous unforced errors against them back in September,” Marcos said. We need to start out strong, and most important of all, we need to believe that we could and will beat them. Minimize our unforced errors and we will be in the sectional finals on Saturday in Baraboo.”
