Kent Weiler has been around the sport of wrestling a long time.

Weiler was a standout on the mats three decades ago. And Weiler has been Middleton’s wrestling coach since 2005.

So when Weiler utters the following words, you listen closely.

“In all my years, that was the best high school match I’ve ever been a part of,” Weiler said of the Big Eight Conference meet held at Madison La Follette on Feb. 3.

Few would argue with Weiler.

There was drama, intrigue, suspense and tension.

In the end, upstart Janesville Craig won the conference title with 228 points. Sun Prairie was a close second with 221, while Middleton was third at 220.

“All day long I kept telling them, ‘Someone’s got to win a match you’re not supposed to,’ ” Weiler said. “We came up just a little short of that.”

Middleton junior wrestling standout Kevin Meicher won his second Big Eight Conference title in three years. Meicher pinned Sun Prairie’s Karson Sutton at 152 pounds in the title match in 1:21 and improved to 37-0 on the season.

Meicher opened with a first round bye, then pinned Madison La Follette’s Alejandro Martinez in 1:55. In the semifinals, Meicher pinned Fernando Badillo of Beloit Memorial in 1:01. Then in the title match, Meicher rolled past Sutton.

“He’s just a great kid to coach,” Weiler said of Meicher. “He’s healthy. He’s wrestling great. The next few weeks are going to be fun.”

In addition to Meicher’s big day, Middleton got second place finishes from Joe Hoffman at 138 pounds, Dion Huff at 195, Gavin Adler at 220 and heavyweight Ortez Lockett.

Huff earned a first round bye, then pinned Salvador Acosta of Janesville Parker in 54 seconds. Huff pinned C.J. Green of Madison Memorial in 3:52, then fell to Linzell Burks of Beloit Memorial, 8-4, in the title match.

Adler received a pair of byes, then downed Brady Schenk of Janesville Craig, 11-7, in the semifinals. In the championship match, Mason Smith of Sun Prairie edged Adler, 6-3.

Lockett received a first round bye, then pinned Eli LaBelle of Madison LaFollette in 19 seconds. In the semifinals, Lockett defeated Ryan Caudle of Beloit Memorial, 8-2. But in the finals, Keeanu Benton of Janesville Craig pinned Lockett in 1:27.

Hoffman received a first round bye, then pinned Nick Heinzen of Verona in 1:16. In the semifinals, Hoffman defeated Wyatt Thiel of Sun Prairie, 8-3. Then in the finals, Janesville Craig’s Ethan Smith defeated Hoffman, 7-2.

While Middleton would have loved to win the title, Weiler knew his kids performed extremely well.

“It stings when your goal is win it,” Weiler said. “But the kids had great day.

“It was a great team effort and the whole team was involved, which was good to see. The kids wrestled well and we hit our seed or exceeded it at almost every weight class. We just came up a little bit short.”
