Hole by hole, round by round, their confidence grows.

The results — reflective of a team that truly believes — have been stunning. And one has to wonder just where the ceiling might be for Middleton’s boys’ golf team.

The Cardinals — a group consisting of one senior, three sophomores and a freshman — continue to put up eye-popping numbers. The highlight came last Saturday, when Middleton shot a season-low 304 and tied for second at the star-studded, 36-team MACC Fund Invitational held at Tuckaway Country Club in Franklin.

Middleton also finished second at the 12-team Onalaska Invite last Friday. In addition, the Cardinals — who played without two of their top five golfers — placed eighth among 20 teams at the WPGA Legends Invite at Bristlecone Pines in Hartland.

“They’re sure starting to come around,” Middleton coach Tom Cabalka said of his team. “Their scores are getting better and better and it’s been a lot of fun to see the growth.”

Middleton’s finest hour came at the MACC Fund Invite, which featured the top two teams in the state, Hartland Arrowhead and Marquette. Arrowhead won the event with a blistering 298, while Middleton and Marquette tied for second, six shots back.

Middleton sophomore Kip Sullivan tied for seventh individually with a stellar 74, while Andy Zucker tied for ninth at 75. Sophomore Tommy Kriewaldt added a 76 and sophomore Carson Frisch shot a 79.

“The course was wet and had very little roll,” Cabalka said. “Plus it was not shortened for us. So to throw a 74, 75, 76 and 79 at that golf course is pretty impressive.”

Middleton was awfully impressive at the Onalaska Invite, as well. Madison Edgewood won the event with 298, while Middleton (308), Sparta (327), Hudson (328) and River Falls (328) rounded out the top five.

The Cardinals’ remarkably consistent group was at it again.

Sullivan shot a 76, freshman Jacob Beckman and Kriewaldt shot 77s and Zucker fired a 78.

“Andy was not playing well early, but has really started to find his game,” Cabalka said. “That was important because you need your leader to throw good scores up there.

Carson, Tommy and Kip have just been brilliant. They’re just so steady. And Jacob Beckman’s going to be a really good player for a long time here.”

Middleton also finished eighth at the Legends Invite. Two of the Cardinals’ top five golfers couldn't get out of school, and their team score dipped.

Arrowhead finished first with a 302, while Middleton shot a 325.

Beckman led the way with a 76, while Zucker shot a 79.

“I’m really encouraged by the way they’re playing,” Cabalka said. “What’s nice is we have a really good No. 5 golfer (Beckman) and not everyone has that.

“So we’re deeper than a lot of teams and that really helps. I think we’re all pretty excited.”

• On deck: Middleton hosted a triangular with Madison La Follette and Madison Memorial Tuesday. Madison West was also part of that event, but only to compete against Middleton in a dual meet.

The Cardinals then headed to Yahara Wednesday to meet Madison East and Verona.
