Kalla Schaefer will play anyone, anytime, anywhere.

Middleton’s boys’ tennis coach avoids no one — ever. And while there may be some short-term pain, there’s undoubtedly long-term gains.

The Cardinals traveled to the Nicolet Invite last weekend, went 2-2 overall and finished fourth. The tournament included several of the state’s top teams and Middleton showed it’s capable of playing with almost all of them.

“It is good for us to have the opportunity to play in this tournament that has the top teams in the state,” said Schaefer, whose team is ranked No. 6 in the latest poll. “We are in a strong conference and subsectional, so it's beneficial to be pushed before we start that portion of the season, coming up in a week and a half.”

Middleton opened with an impressive 5-2 win over Nicolet. That marked the second time this year the Cardinals toppled the third-ranked Knights.

Middleton swept all four singles matches, with Ryan Gold, Haiwen Dai, Kunwarjit Singh and Nitin Somersandaram all posting wins. Only Dai needed three sets for his win.

Middleton’s No. 3 doubles team of Gene Kim and Alton Yan also notched a straight sets win.

“It was a good win beating Nicolet for the second time,” Schaefer said. “They are a strong team and when a team loses close they are usually even more motivated to win the second time. They are ranked No. 3 now, so if we had lost we might have dropped a few spots.”

Middleton followed that with an impressive 7-0 rout of Waukesha South.

Gold, Dai, Singh and Somersandaram all rolled to straight set wins. That quartet lost a total of just seven games in eight sets.

Middleton’s top doubles team of Sam Dettman and Rafael Sanga rallied for a three-set win. Brandon Bodak and Adam Schiebler rolled at No. 2 doubles, while Yan and Kim cruised at No. 3.

Last Saturday, Middleton dropped a 4-3 heartbreaker to Arrowhead.

Gold and Somersandaram notched singles wins, while Dettman and Sanga posted a win at No. 1 doubles.

The key match came at No. 2 doubles, where Arrowhead’s Noah Ebel and Sam Kredell edged Bodak and Schiebler, 3-6, 6-4, 12-10.

“The Arrowhead match was close,” Schaefer said. “Had the third set superbreaker that we lost, 12-10, gone our way we would have won that match.”

Middleton then dropped a 7-0 decision to Marquette.

The Cardinals also rolled to a 6-1 win over Janesville Parker last Tuesday.
