In 2016, Middleton’s boys’ track and field team was a sectional champion. The Cardinals then went and finished second at the WIAA Division 1 state meet.

Middleton coach Joe Line is hoping for similar results in 2018.

Middleton won its own sectional last Thursday, finishing with 107 points to outdistance runner-up La Crosse Central (82). The Cardinals

qualified 10 individuals in seven events and one relay team for the state meet, which will be held Friday and Saturday at Veterans Memorial Stadium in La Crosse.

“Those guys who made it (to state) could all score,” Middleton coach Joe Line said. “That’s really big. Not only score, but be top three in some events.

“The sky’s the limit. If we have our perfect meet, we could do some damage.”

Middleton’s girls were led by senior Jen McGinnis, who qualified for state in the 400 and 1,600 relays and the triple jump. Sun Prairie won the girls’ title with 151.5 points, while Middleton finished with 55 points.

“We have a good squad of girls going to state, a good mix of girls who have been there before and newcomers to the sport,” Middleton girls’ coach Cory Christnovich said. “It will be a fun weekend. We stay in the dorms now. It works out really well.”

Things certainly worked out well for Middleton senior Aaron Richardson, who qualified for state in the 100-meter dash, the 200 and the long jump. Richardson has not been fully healthy in recent weeks, but he did enough to advance through sectionals and will have eight days of rest before state.

“It’s really amazing,” Richardson said. “It was my goal just to get two. I’ve been dealing with a slight injury, but it’s not like it’s totally bothering me at all. I’ve been treating it and taking it slow.”

Richardson was second in the 200-meter dash (22.72) and is seeded 19th at state. He was second in the long jump (21-7 ¾) and is seeded 17th and was third in the 100-meter dash (11.11) and is seeded 10th.

“It was tough because Aaron’s not 100%,” Line said. “He was hurt after conference.

“He grinded it out at regionals and we weren’t even sure if he was going to be able to go or just try one event to see how it was going to go. He cannot get to full speed, so we’re really pumped he will have a week off and going to state in those three events.”

Middleton’s 1,600-meter runners were sensational at sectionals and claimed the top three spots in the race. Junior Caleb Easton won the race in 4:22.45 and is seeded seventh, senior Sam Jaeger was second (4:24.24) and is seeded ninth, and sophomore Zach Leffel was third (4:26.26) and is seeded 15th.

Middleton senior Jack Rader won the 3,200 in 9:27.65 and is seeded third at state. And Easton was third in the 3,200 (9:44.65) and is seeded 14th.

“It is a little bittersweet,” Rader said after winning sectionals. “It’s my last sectional and my last time racing at Middleton. It will be really sad to leave it. But I can’t wait to see what’s ahead. It was a nice way to end it all.”

Middleton junior Michael Madoch was also third in the 800-meter run (1:59.15) and is seeded 18th at state. Middleton’s 3,200-meter relay team of sophomore Braedon Gilles, sophomore Zach Leffel, Madoch and Easton was second at sectionals (7:59.85) and is seeded third at state.

“It’s just exciting because it’s fun to go (to state) with the guys,” Madoch said. “To go alone wouldn’t be the same. It’s fun hanging out with the guys and just being with them.”

Senior Thorne Powers had a personal-best in the triple jump (42-10) and finished third. He is now seeded 21st at state.

“I’m glad we have a lot of guys going to state,” Richardson said. “It’s been an amazing senior year for me. I couldn’t wish for a better team. I couldn’t be prouder of the guys and all of the support I’ve gotten from my friends and family and coaches.”

Middleton’s girls are poised to do some damage, as well.

McGinnis won the triple jump (36-7) and sophomore Sitori Tanin was second (36-2 ½). McGinnis is now seeded 12th at state and Tanin is seeded 13th.

“I hoped we would get first and second,” McGinnis said. “I’m so proud of Sitori. She’s just a sophomore, and she’s doing so well. She keeps pushing me. She’ll jump farther than me, then I’ll push her and jump farther than her. We go back and forth. It’s a coin toss on whoever wins, honestly.”

Tanin also finished third in the high jump (5-3) and is seeded 15th.

“Jen and Sitori are great athletes and they’re phenomenal triple jumpers,” Christnovich said. “They are super coachable, super easy to be around, and just super fun to watch triple jump. They’re great.”

Middleton’s 400-meter relay team of sophomore Natalie McLain, McGinnis, freshman Kenzie Nickels and junior Tai Pritts was second (49.70) and is seeded 12th at state. The Cardinals’ 1,600-meter relay team of senior Juliana Castillo, McGinnis, senior Marie Mayers and junior Hadley Braaten was third at sectionals (4:01.06) and is seeded 12th.

“I’m proud of our team,” Tanin said. “It’s fun to go to state as an individual, but we also have a lot of relays going so that makes it even better. It’s always a great time at state.”
