Middleton’s boys’ tennis team has jumped to No. 6 in the state.

And by the looks of it, the Cardinals appear poised to continue their trend upward.

Middleton went 5-0 last week, highlighted by four straight wins at their own invitational. The Cardinals also rolled past Madison Memorial, 7-0, in a Big Eight Conference match last Tuesday.

“Our team performed at a high level, even in really difficult conditions with the wind on Friday,” Middleton coach Tony Mirasola said. “What continues to impress me with our guys is their preparation and level of focus no matter who the opponent is.”

Here’s a recap of Middleton’s five wins:

• Middleton 7, Madison Memorial 0 — Singles players Ryan Gold, Ian Connell, Jacob Mandelbrot and Akshay Kelshiker all won in straight sets.

The Cardinals’ three doubles all rolled, as well. Those duos included Sam Dettman and Brandon Bodak, Alton Yan and Gene Kim, and Jordan Cheng and Anders Clark.

• Middleton 7, Mauston 0 — The Cardinals rolled past Mauston in their own tournament, winning all 14 sets comfortably.

Gold, Connell, Mandelbrot and Kelshiker all posted singles wins. The duos of Dettman and Bodak, Yan and Kim, and Cheng and Clark all cruised to doubles wins, as well.

• Middleton 7, Sauk Prairie 0 — The Cardinals’ four singles players — Gold, Connell, Mandelbrot and Kelshiker — rolled to straight set wins.

In doubles play, Middleton’s top duo of Dettman and Bodak defeated Noah Wankerl and Kelby Mack, 6-4, 6-2. Yan and Kim downed Max Sailor and Isaac Green, 6-2, 6-3, at No. 2. And Cheng and Clark cruised to a 6-1, 6-1 win over Carson Brinkmeier and Scott Graves.

• Middleton 7, Sheboygan North 0 — Connell jumped to No. 1 singles and the Cardinals didn't miss a beat. Connell, Mandelbrot, Kelshiker and Kieran Gopal all cruised to straight set wins.

In doubles action, Middleton’s duos of Dettman and Bodak, Yan and Kim, and Cheng and Clark all cruised to easy wins.

• Middleton 5, Green Bay Notre Dame 2 — The Cardinals defeated the Tritons, the top-ranked team in Division 2.

The Cardinals went a perfect 4-0 in singles play.

Gold defeated Myles Krzewinski, 6-1, 6-1 at No. 1 singles, while Connell downed J.V. Steckart, 6-1, 6-2, at No. 2. Mandelbrot posted a hard fought 2-6, 6-4, 13-11 win over Tommy Zakowski at No. 3. And Kelshiker defeated Ryan Schram, 6-0, 6-3, at No. 4.

Middleton’s doubles win came from Cheng and Clark at No. 3.

“Playing Notre Dame was a great test for us,” Mirasola said. “They had the best doubles line-up we've seen all year and pushed us in the singles matches as well.”
