The Milwaukee Marquette boys swimming invite is the closest thing there is to the state meet during the regular season.

There are 32 teams that descend on Marquette in a meet packed with many of the state’s elite swimmers.

So Middleton didn't feel too bad after finishing fifth among the 32 teams last Saturday. The Cardinals brought just 12 swimmers to the meet and hung with many of the state’s top performers.

Sun Prairie won the meet with 226 points, while Waukesha South’s co-op (224), Madison West (212), Greenfield’s co-op (184) and Middleton (178) rounded out the top five.

“This was one of the fastest meets of the season for us, and there were some new teams which made it one of the fastest years for the invite,” Middleton coach Danny Lynam said. “It was the first and only time until state that we swam (against) both Waukesha South and Sun Prairie, who are the other two top ranked teams in the state.”

Middleton senior Nathan Kim won the 200-yard IM and was sixth in the 100-yard butterfly. Senior Forrest Peterson was third in the 100-yard butterfly and sixth in the 100-yard backstroke.

Freshman Nick Chirafisi was fourth in the 500-yard freestyle and junior Joe McNerney was 12th. Senior Nate Lamers was ninth in the 50-yard freestyle and senior Calvin Roberts was 11th.

Chirafisi was 11th in the 200-yard freestyle and freshman Jack Madoch was 13th in the 100-yard freestyle. And diver Isaac Roush was sixth overall.

Middleton’s 200-yard freestyle relay team of Lamers, Roberts, senior Ben Collier and Kim was fourth. And the Cardinals’ 200-yard medley relay team of freshman Tyler Choedak, Lamers, Peterson and Roberts was eighth.

“We had a rough start with our 200 medley relay,” Lynam said. “We were trying out a new order that ended up not being as fast as we had hoped. After that the individuals went well.

“We had a majority of season bests, which can be tough to get coming out of a difficult two-week break. We stayed mostly healthy the last couple weeks, which was also great for us. A lot of guys are starting to put together some consistently fast races which is a good indicator that we are in a good place in our training.”
