The second season has officially arrived.

And if it’s anything like the first season, it’s going to be a lot of fun for Middleton’s boys swimming team.

The Cardinals won the 11-team Middleton Invite last Saturday, posting a team-score of 387.5 points. Sun Prairie was second with 333 points, while Lincolnshire (Ill.) Stevenson (291), Madison West (280) and Madison Memorial (220.5) rounded out the top five.

“We were very pleasantly surprised at how well things went,” Middleton coach Danny Lynam said. “We felt this could be an opportunity for us to really shine. Our sectionals guys were still in the peak of their training last week, so it was encouraging to see them still able to get out and be competitive with some of the fastest teams around us.”

Middleton’s quartet of Nathan Kim, Nate Lamers, Jack Madoch and Forrest Peterson won the 400-yard freestyle relay. The Cardinals’ foursome of Lamers, Kim, Peterson and Calvin Roberts was second in the 200-yard medley relay.

And Middleton’s 200-yard freestyle relay team of Ben Collier, Madoch, Nick Hinz and Roberts was third.

Kim won the 200-yard IM, while Tyler Choedak was ninth. Nick Chirafisi won the 50-yard freestyle and Joe McNerney was ninth.

Kim was second in the 100-yard backstroke, while Choedak was sixth and Sam Larsen was ninth. Peterson, Chirafisi and McNerney went 2-3-4 in the 200-yard freestyle, while Madoch was ninth.

Lamers was second in the 100-yard butterfly and Jay Sullivan was fourth. Peterson was fourth in the 100-yard freestyle, while Madoch was seventh.

Venden Berge was seventh in the 100-yard breaststroke. And Lamers, Roberts and Collier were eighth, ninth and 10th, respectively, in the 50-yard freestyle.

“After watching our JV guys have a dominant performance on Thursday at the Sun Prairie JV invite, the varsity guys were pretty motivated to swim fast,” Lynam said. “Now we have set up some good momentum coming into the postseason. We never want to get comfortable or complacent with our training, but it helps us stay sharp and focused knowing we can be competitive at that top level.”

• On deck: The Big Eight Conference diving meet is Friday at Middleton High School at 5:30 p.m. The conference swim meet is Saturday at 1 p.m. at Beloit Memorial High School.
