The 2019-’20 high school sports season was cut short due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

But in the games that were played, no one accomplished more than Middleton High School.

The Cardinals won the annual WSN Cup Large School Division trophy, which is presented by Wissports.net. The award honors schools that provide and achieve success in many of the WIAA sponsored sports.

Middleton won the Large School award for a second straight year after Arrowhead won the first 11 titles. The Large School Division is for schools with enrollment over 1,000.

Middleton finished with 585.43 points, while the Warhawks were second with 554.0. Brookfield East (524), Muskego (418) and Brookfield Central (363.5) rounded out the top five.

Points are awarded for finishes in the state tournament of every sport. Generally, the top 32 teams in each sport are awarded points.

If less than 32 teams participate in a non-bracket sport state meet then those are the only schools that are awarded points. For co-op teams, the total points are divided equally between the co-op schools.

Teams are then awarded points as follows:

• State title — 100

• State runner-up — 80

• Third or fourth — 60

• Fifth through eighth — 45

• Ninth through 16th — 20

• 17th through 32nd — 10

Middleton won state titles in girls golf and boys cross country during a terrific fall season. The Cardinals also finished fourth in girls cross country and sixth in girls swim and dive.

Still, Brookfield East sat in first place after the fall season with 428 points, followed by Arrowhead (392) and Middleton (382).

But the Cardinals had an outstanding winter season, as well, and surged to the top of the standings.

Middleton won a boys state swimming title in the winter and the girls basketball team reached the state tournament before COVID-19 led to the cancelation of that event.

The Cardinals were the only Large School to score more than 200 points.

In 2018-’19, Middleton finished with 762.36 points and edged runner-up Sun Prairie (748) for the title.
