MIDDLETON–Mary Cleone (Coyle) Carlson passed away holding her daughter’s hand on Easter morning, April 9, 2023, at her home in Waunakee. Mary was born on Dec. 2, 1942, to Leo and Clara (Stoppleworth) Coyle in Madison. She grew up in the Dudgeon-Monroe Neighborhood on West Lawn Avenue, attending both Blessed Sacrament School and Edgewood High School (Class of 1961).

Mary was married to Stanley G. Carlson in 1960, and they raised their four children in her childhood home, sending them also to Blessed Sacrament School. Mary and Stan actively participated in parish activities and events and remained married for 25 years. Mary worked as a phlebotomist at St. Mary’s Hospital and later owned her own business providing paramedical insurance exams, pre-employment physicals and drug screening throughout southern Wisconsin. Mary lived in Florida briefly but returned to Wisconsin to be near her growing family. A proud Pine Bluff Coyle, she traveled with her Coyle cousins to the Irish homeland in 2006. Mary worked many positions in her later life including customer service at American Family Insurance, Land’s End, and Farwell Pools. She was especially proud of her work with RSVP of Dane County and the Foster Grandparent Program, with which she was involved until she passed.

Mary is survived by her sister, Colleen Maier of Glen Ellyn, IL; brother, Tom Coyle (Sally) of Lake Forest, IL; children, Chris Carlson (Sherri Smith) of Portage, Carole Carlson of Cottage Grove, Craig Carlson (Stephanie) of Madison, and Kim Anderson (Jason) of Mount Horeb; grandchildren, Lisa Carlson, Ian Mueller Carlson, Canaan Klein (Kayla Wirz), Luke Carlson, Cameron Carlson, Kate Carlson, and Eden Anderson; great-grandchildren, Caleb Lawrenz, Aijada Williams, TJ Klein and Ressick Klein; and many cherished nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and colleagues. She was met in heaven by her loving parents; brother, John (Dolores) Coyle; brother-in-law, Joseph Maier; special friend, Dale Budig; along with other family and friends who preceded her in death.

Mary’s family would like to thank the dedicated staff at Sienna Crest Assisted Living in Waunakee for the love and care of their mom; Agrace HospiceCare for their guidance and attention in her last weeks, the exceptional staff at the Interventional Radiology Department at UW Hospital, and the many years of excellent care from her physician, Lindsay Voss.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, 2116 Hollister Ave., Madison, on April 24, 2023, at 11 a.m. A visitation will be held from 10 a.m. until the beginning of Mass, with a celebration luncheon to follow. Mary’s remains will be laid to rest at St. Mary’s of Pine Bluff after the luncheon at 2 p.m.
