Man Charged With Trying To Bribe Court Clerk To Keep Name Out Of Newspaper

A local man who hoped to avoid having his name listed in this newspaper’s court report, which usually runs near the back of the newspaper, has found his way onto the front page after being charged with attempted bribery.

Leo A. Ziegler, 77, allegedly tried to give the city’s municipal court clerk a $34 “tip” in an unsuccessful effort to convince her to delete his name from the transcript of court findings she provides to the Middleton Times-Tribune.

The clerk refused to take Ziegler’s money, telling him it would go against her morals to accept it or alter court records. He persisted, even offering to mail additional money to her home. She declined to provide her address.

The initial charge against Ziegler, which was for fourth-degree sexual assault, carried a $366 municipal citation.

Tax Forms No Longer Available At Library

From the desk of Pamela Westby, director of the Middleton Public Library:

Preprinted income tax forms will no longer be available at Middleton Public Library in 2014. The late release of printed forms in 2013 from both the Federal and State level, difficulties in obtaining the most frequently requested forms and instructions, and the move toward electronic tax filing have persuaded library staff that it is no longer a service we should offer.

Because of changing tax laws in the past two years, the IRS has had to delay printing and distributing forms. People become frustrated when they made multiple trips to the library hoping to pick up their tax forms only to learn the forms are not yet available. We want people to have a good experience at the library, but where tax forms are concerned, that’s been taken out of our control.

Slow/No Wake Declared On Lake Monona

Dane County Executive Joe Parisi and Dane County Sheriff Dave Mahoney have signed a declaration officially calling for a Slow/No Wake Order be issued for Lake Monona, including Squaw Bay, and Lake Waubesa.  The County Board Chair has expressed his support for the declaration as well.

The orders are in effect for the entire surfaces of the lakes.

Recent flooding rains have increased lake levels and the order is being issued in part due to the potential for additional rainfall over the next 24 hours.

Under Slow/No Wake, boats must move as slowly as possible while still maintaining steering control and produce no wake.  The order is in effect as of this morning and will be in effect until at least Monday, July 1st.
