Middleton’s boys tennis team is off to a rip-roaring start.

The Cardinals won the Madison Memorial Invite last weekend, defeating Oshkosh West, 6-1, in the championship match on Saturday.

Middleton cruised past Sun Prairie, 6-1, in the semifinals Saturday. In Friday’s matches, the Cardinals nipped Madison Memorial and Homestead by identical 4-3 scores.

“These were our first matches of the season and a lot of teams already had four-plus matches under their belt,” Middleton coach Kalla Schaefer said. “You never know how those first couple of matches are going to go, but players came through right from the first match.”

In the title match, Middleton got singles wins from Ryan Gold at No. 2, Haiwen Dai at No. 3 and Nitin Somersanderam at No. 4.

The Cardinals’ top doubles team of Sam Dettman and Rafael Sanga rolled to a 6-0, 6-0 win. Middleton’s No. 2 team of Adam Schiebler and Mason Pyle posted a 6-1, 6-1 win. And the Cardinals’ No. 3 team of Alton Yan and Jacob Scher cruised to a 6-1, 6-0 win.

“Players played hard in their positions and it was a good weekend for the team,” Schaefer said.

Middleton had a tough 4-3 win over traditional state power Homestead.

Gold and Schiebler notched wins at No. 1 and No. 4 singles. And in doubles play, Xavier Sanga and Rafael Sanga rolled at No. 1, while Scher and Yan rallied for a 1-6, 6-2, 6-2 win.

In Middleton’s 4-3 win over Madison Memorial, Xavier Sanga and Dettman posted singles wins. And in doubles play, Rafael Sanga and Pyle, along with Yan and Scher teamed up for wins.

Middleton also had an easy time against Sun Prairie, rolling to four singles wins, along with victories at No. 2 and 3 doubles.

Middleton also posted a 5-2 win over Madison West last Thursday.

• On deck: Middleton was at Janesville Craig Tuesday, then hosts Verona Thursday at 4 p.m. The Cardinals are then at the Verona Invite Friday and Saturday.
