Soccer Cards fall to West

A Big Eight Conference title certainly remains possible.

But for now, Middleton’s girls soccer team will have to wait.

That’s because the Cardinals dropped a 2-1 decision to Madison West last Thursday, leaving the Big Eight race a muddled mess.

The Cardinals and Madison Memorial share the top spot with 6-1 records. Madison West and Verona are tied for third with 5-1-1 marks.

Middleton could have won the title outright by beating West. Instead, things will be decided in the final week of the regular season.

“We all were very bummed and disappointed in the result and what we put on the field,” Middleton coach Mary Duffy said. “We left too many ‘if's’ on the field — something we have been trying to avoid.

Boys track team wins Myhrum

The WIAA Division 1 boys state track and field meet is just three weeks away.

But Middleton competed in a mini-state meet last Friday and showed that it’s certainly ready for the real thing.

The Cardinals won the 17-team, star-studded Myhrum Invitational at Hartland Arrowhead. Middleton finished with 93 points and edged runner-up Mukwonago (89.50). Oak Creek (66), Arrowhead (65.50) and Fond du Lac (65) rounded out the top five.

Middleton led Mukwonago by 2.5 points heading to the final event of the night. The Cardinals then finished third in the 1,600-meter relay, while Mukwonago was fourth.

That allowed Middleton to hold on for the win.

“It was a pretty exciting ending,” Middleton coach Isaac Mezera said.

There were plenty of exciting moments in this thrilling meet.

Perrin Hagge won the 1,600-meter run in 4:13.44 and broke Ricky Reusser’s school record in the process.

MHS golfers keep rolling

Erin — Middleton’s boys golf team has played on some of the most remarkable courses in the state this season.

There was the Irish Course at Whistling Straits. The Cardinals have been at University Ridge, Bristlecone Pines and Trappers Turn.

But last Saturday certainly had a different feel.

The Cardinals traveled to Erin Hills, home of the 2017 U.S. Open, for the Lake Country Charity Invitational. And not only did Middleton play some of its best golf of the year, it did so on a historic course.

The Cardinals shot a season-low 300 and finished third in Division 1 at this sensational 36-team field. Eau Claire North won the team title with a 293, while Milwaukee Marquette was second at 296.

“This is just amazing,” said Cardinals junior Joey Levin, who shot an even-par 72 and tied for fifth individually. “This is by far the highlight of the year.”

Softball Cards in title hunt

Down the stretch they come.

And Middleton’s girls softball team could be in the perfect position to rally at the finish line.

The Cardinals won both of their games last week, rolling past Madison La Follette, 14-5, in Thursday and downing Madison East, 7-0, last Friday. Middleton improved to 14-4 overall and 10-2 in the Big Eight Conference.

With just more than a week left in the regular season, the Cardinals are now in a three-way battle with Verona and Janesville Craig for the league title. The Wildcats are also 10-2, while the Cougars are 9-2.

Making things more fun is the fact Janesville Craig visits Middleton for a doubleheader Friday beginning at 5 p.m.

“We need to keep focused for each game,” Middleton manager Cherie Hellenbrand said. “The girls are working hard in practice. We are determined to get better every day.”

The Cardinals have certainly gotten better in recent weeks and have now won eight of their last nine games.

Girls track team 5th at Myhrum

The Big Eight Conference girls track and field meet is Friday in Verona.

And Middleton appears ready to defend its conference title.

The Cardinals finished fifth at the star-studded Myhrum Invitational at Hartland Arrowhead last Friday. And in the process, Middleton placed several athletes on the state honor roll.

“It will be a tough challenge under the lights at Verona,” Middleton coach Tara Franklin said. “The talent from Sun Prairie and Beloit Memorial, along with several very strong athletes in the distance events from (Madison) Memorial and  West will make it very interesting as the points add up during the meet.

“Our goals this week are to stay healthy and put up some great times and distances across the board on Friday. With any luck, the points add up in our favor and we can repeat as the Big Eight Conference champs.”

There are many signs that such a finish is possible.

Title dreams alive for soccer Cards

Middleton’s girls soccer team has some lofty goals this season.

But everything always starts with a Big Eight Conference title. And the Cardinals took a gigantic step towards that objective last Thursday.

Senior midfielder Mady Warda broke a scoreless tie midway through the second half and the Cardinals held on for a 1-0 win over Madison Memorial. Middleton improved to 6-0 in the league, while the Spartans slipped to 4-1.

“It was nice to see the girls put together a solid win that was close,” Middleton coach Mary Duffy said. “They clawed and scrapped for every second of the game.”

The Memorial win highlighted a wild week for the Cardinals. Middleton (9-5-3 overall) also defeated Sun Prairie, 5-0, last Tuesday, then dropped a pair of games at the Brookfield East Tournament last Saturday.

Middleton won the Big Eight Conference title last year. And the Spartans were a major challenger to take the Cardinals’ crown away this spring.

Baseball Cards rally past East

Perhaps this will be the jumpstart Middleton’s baseball team needs.

The Cardinals trailed Madison East, 11-6, last Saturday and seemed headed to a seventh loss in eight games.

But Middleton rallied with six runs in its final two at bats and edged the host Purgolders, 12-11. The Cardinals improved to 4-8 in the Big Eight Conference and 6-11 overall.

“Streaks always get ended, some sooner than others,” Middleton manager Tom Schmitt said. “Let’s just hope we don’t have anymore losing streaks for a while.”

Middleton scored four times in the sixth and pulled within 11-10. Liam Belleveau and Brennan Schmitt drew one-out walks, then Joe Ludwig singled to load the bases.

Nolan Kouba was hit by a pitch to score Belleveau, Schmitt scored on a passed ball and a Drew Finley-Haag groundout plated Ludwig. Cris Mejias then doubled home Kouba to pull Middleton within 11-10.

Tennis Cardinals heating up

Middleton’s boys tennis team faced some of the state’s top competition last weekend. And the Cardinals more than held their own.

Middleton reached the semifinals of the Nicolet Sweet 16 Tournament, where it lost to Milwaukee Marquette, 4-3. The Cardinals eventually finished in third place, while the Hilltoppers went on to win the tournament championship.

“Prior to the Nicolet Invite we had not yet had a quality win,” Cardinals coach Andre Glass said. “So going into the weekend I wasn’t sure what to expect. Everyone showed moments of glory, but without a doubt, I feel we can, will and must do better.”

The Cardinals opened with a 5-2 win over Oshkosh North in the first round.

Middleton sophomore Jake Van Emburgh — who finished third at state last year and recently joined the team — notched a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 1 singles. Geri Uj, who had been injured the first month of the season, posted a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 2 singles.

Softball Cards are red hot

Amazingly, the postseason is just three weeks away for all girls softball teams.

And with the playoffs approaching fast, Middleton has picked the perfect time to heat up.

The Cardinals won six of seven games last week, highlighted by a win over Verona.

Middleton improved to 12-4 overall and is 8-2 in the Big Eight Conference.

Here’s a recap of the Cardinals’ terrific week.

• Game 1: Middleton 14, Janesville Parker 2 — The Cardinals rolled past the Vikings in the first game of a doubleheader last Tuesday. The game was stopped after five innings due to the 10-run mercy.

Rachel Everson led the offense, going 3-for-4 with a double and five RBI. Lauren Banke and Shelby Ballweg both had two RBI, as well.

MacKenzie Kopp picked up the win, striking out three and allowing just one earned run in four innings.

Big week for MHS golfers

Two elite tournaments.

Two more wins.

Middleton’s boys golf team — ranked No. 2 in the state — continued its sensational season last week.

The Cardinals won the Onalaska Invite last Friday and the Sparta Invitational last Saturday.

“Great opportunity to bond as a team,” Middleton coach Tom Cabalka said. “We had a good chance to talk about what it will take to meet our team goals.”

The Cardinals seem well on their way to reaching all of their goals this year. And winning two premier tournaments was simply the latest step.

Middleton shot a 308 and edged defending state champion Mequon Homestead (309) to win the Onalaska Invitational last Friday at the La Crosse Country Club.

Brady Thomas shot a 2-over-par 74 to lead the Cardinals. That was also good for fifth place individually.

Both Joey Levin and Nils Arneson carded 75s, which placed them in a tie for sixth.
