Soccer Cardinals hang tough

The schedule has been jam-packed for Middleton’s girls soccer team in recent weeks. But the Cardinals are hanging tough and remain in the hunt for a Big Eight Conference championship and a solid postseason seed.

Last week, Middleton went 2-2-1 overall and held its own at the Tournament of Champions in Iowa. The Cardinals are now 7-3-4 overall and tied for the conference lead with a 4-0 record.

Here’s a recap of Middleton’s week.

• Oregon 3, Middleton 1 — The Panthers raced to a 2-0 lead and never looked back last Monday.

“Well, we knew that they were fast,” Middleton coach Mary Duffy said. “But what Oregon is best at is quick transitions with more than two players in the attack.

“I believe the score reflects our communication breakdowns in our defensive shape from the forwards’ position to the back. The bonus of knowing they scored on our mis-shape is that we can attempt to fix it. So positives come from a loss.”

Boys track team second at Cardinal Relays

Middleton’s boys track and field team has become accustomed to finishing first at outdoor meets.

In the past year, the only time the Cardinals haven’t won an outdoor meet was at the 2014 WIAA Division 1 state meet. And even there, the Cardinals were an impressive fifth overall.

Middleton finished second at last Friday’s Cardinal Relays. But don't think for a second that the Cardinals left disappointed.

Appleton North won the star-studded event with 148 points and Middleton was a close second at 129. Holmen (93), Sun Prairie (87) and Onalaska (84) rounded out the top five at the eight-team event.

“Appleton North and Holmen are extremely talented teams who pushed us to some fantastic performances,” Middleton coach Isaac Mezera said. “In the end, North was too strong in the field events for us to keep up at a meet like this.

“Overall, it was a great experience for the guys to see some strong competition.”

Girls track team wins Middleton Invite

The Cardinals Relays are always one of the most thrilling meets of the season.

When the home team wins — and edges an archrival in the process — it’s even more enjoyable.

That’s exactly what happened last Friday when Middleton won its own relay event with a 133.5-133 victory over Sun Prairie. Appleton North (102), Waunakee (80) and Onalaska (74.5) rounded out the top five at the eight-team tournament.

“There were some phenomenal athletes at this meet and it was great to have such a competitive and different kind of event for us to really see how much depth we have,” Middleton coach Tara Franklin said.

Middleton had several sensational performances at this event.

Baseball Cards stuck in a funk

Middleton’s baseball team dropped three of four games last week.

The Cardinals are now 5-9 overall and 3-6 in the Big Eight Conference.

Here’s a recap of Middleton’s week.

• Beloit Memorial 6, Middleton 4 — The visiting Purple Knights toppled the Cardinals last Tuesday.

Liam Belleveau had two hits and an RBI for Middleton. Joe Ludwig and Hunter Bindl also had RBI.

The game was tied, 2-2, in the fifth. But Beloit struck for three runs and pulled away.

Alec Morrison threw five innings and took the loss for the Cardinals.

• Janesville Craig 9, Middleton 3 — The Cardinals jumped to a 2-0 first inning lead on the conference-leading Cougars.  But Craig (9-0, 13-0) scored all nine of its runs in the final four innings and prevailed.

Joe Ludwig and Bindl both had two hits for Middleton, while Liam Belleveau, Brennan Schmitt and Alan Roden all had RBI.

Lambo hopes NFL comes calling

He was here — and gone — in a flash.

But Josh Lambo certainly left his mark. And nearly a decade later, Lambo’s name still creates a buzz throughout the Middleton community.

Lambo was one of the most impressive soccer players to ever walk the halls of Middleton High School — even though he was only in the Cardinals’ program just two short months.

Lambo eventually played four years of professional soccer, but eventually turned his attention to football. Lambo then spent three seasons at Texas A&M, where he became one of the top collegiate kickers in the country.

Now, when the NFL Draft is held Thursday through Saturday, the 24-year-old Lambo has a chance to be a late round selection. At worst, Lambo will wind up in somebody’s training camp this summer.

If Lambo eventually makes an NFL roster, he’ll join Casey Cramer, Nick Toon and Ryan Groy as Middleton athletes since 2004 to play in the NFL.

Blondes vs. Brunettes game Sunday

The Alzheimer’s Association Blondes vs. Brunettes flag football game will be held Sunday at 1 p.m. at Keva Sports Center.

The two teams, divided based on the age-old rivalry between blondes and brunettes, aims to increase awareness of Alzheimer’s disease among a new generation.

Funds raised will benefit the care, support, advocacy and research efforts of the Alzheimer’s Association. According to the Alzheimer's Association 2015 Alzheimer's Disease Facts and Figures, nearly two-thirds of Americans with Alzheimer’s disease are women.

A volunteer event driven by young women, the first Blondes vs. Brunettes game was held in Washington D.C. in 2005. Since its inception, Blondes vs. Brunettes has expanded to more than 35 cities, including Boston, Buffalo, Denver, Houston, Kansas City, Los Angeles, Minneapolis-St. Paul and New York. Together, Blondes vs. Brunettes have raised more than $5 million in an effort to tackle Alzheimer’s disease.

Golfers keep on rolling

The weather has left a lot to be desired for Middleton’s boys golf team.

But the Cardinals — the No. 2 ranked team in the state — continue to overcome the less than ideal conditions.

Middleton began last week by winning the Madison East Triangular on Tuesday.

The Cardinals shot a sensational 306 on a 40-degree day with heavy winds. Sun Prairie was second at 340 and Madison East shot 449.

Junior Nils Arneson led the Cardinals with a 75, while junior Brady Thomas carded a 76. Junior Emmet Herb shot a 77 and junior Joey Levin shot a 78.

“If the kids could play well in that weather — which they did — they can play in anything,” Cabalka said. “Great scores under miserable conditions.”

Middleton then finished second at the 24-team Sheboygan North Invite held at The Irish Course at Whistling Straits.

Boys track team wins Watertown Invite

It’s called the Watertown Invitational.

But they might as well change the name of it to the Middleton Invite.

For the fourth straight year, the Cardinals cruised to the championship of the Watertown Invite last Friday. Middleton finished with 156 points and easily outdistanced runner-up Baraboo (125) to win the nine-team invitational.
“Baraboo gave us a good run for our money,” Middleton coach Isaac Mezera said. “But in the end we were just too deep for them.”

Middleton dominated up and down the lineup.

Nnamdi Okoli won the 100-meter dash in 11.1 seconds, while teammate Noah Meeteer was second (11.3). Okoli also won the 200-meter dash (22.9), while teammate Griffin Gussel was third (23.3).

Jack Radar won the 3,200-meter run (9:59.7) and Jack Jesse won the long jump (21-6 ½). Meeteer also won the pole vault (13-0).

Girls track team wins at Watertown

When it comes to weather, it’s been another lousy spring.

And last Friday certainly was no exception.

But Middleton’s girls track and field team overcame some miserable conditions and won the 11-team Watertown Invitational.

The Cardinals finished with 134 points and outdistanced runner-up Lakeside Lutheran (109). Madison Memorial (96), Hartford (93) and Neenah (91) rounded out the top five.

“The weather for this meet has a history of being less than desirable,” Middleton coach Tara Franklin said. “This one was stormy, wet and cold, as well as delayed for nearly 90 minutes.

“Some of the field events were also held indoors. The results for the meet definitely were something to leave us all smiling about.”

That’s for sure.

Middleton had several first place finishes.

Softball Cards split a pair

Middleton’s girls softball team has designs on winning a Big Eight Conference championship this spring.

But if that’s going to happen, the Cardinals can’t stumble against mid-level teams inside the league.

The Cardinals did exactly what they were supposed to and rolled past Madison West, 8-2, last Tuesday. But Middleton stubbed its toe and dropped a 4-3 decision to Beloit Memorial last Thursday.

The Cardinals fell to 6-3 overall and 5-2 in the Big Eight. Middleton is now fourth in the conference standings, but just one game behind league-leading Janesville Craig (6-1, 7-2).

“The loss to Beloit was extremely disappointing,” Middleton manager Cherie Hellenbrand said. “The hits just didn't fall in the gaps. We will move forward as a team, learn and grow from it.”

Middleton played extremely well in its win over Madison West.
