County Mask Mandate to End March 1

DANE COUNTY–Public Health of Madison and Dane County (PHMDC) announced on Monday that face coverings will no longer be required in Dane County beginning March 1 at midnight. The decision comes after a surge in COVID-19 cases plummeted in recent days, reaching a seven-day peak of 1,491 new confirmed cases on Jan. 12.

On Feb. 14 cases we down to 340, less than 25 percent of the peak. In addition, the seven-day average of hospitalizations has fallen 44 percent in the same time frame. Currently 110 people in Dane County are hospitalized due to the Omicron variant of the virus.

In addition, the high number of cases did not translate to as high a spike in hospitalizations as they did prior to vaccinations being readily available. PHMDC continues to encourage vaccination to prevent serious illness.

Middleton looking for A.D. and assistant A.D.

The Jamie Sims-Ben White team didn't last for long.

Sims was named Middleton High School’s athletic director in June, 2020. At that same time, White was named the Cardinals’ assistant athletic director and student activities coordinator.

In recent days, both men have taken new jobs.

Sims was officially named the new principal at Sun Prairie West High School Monday night. He will stay on as Middleton’s A.D. until June 30.

“We are excited to have Principal Sims join the Sun Prairie Area School District,” Sun Prairie Superintendent Brad Saron. “I am confident in his ability to lead as principal of our new high school and know he will create a positive school climate for Sun Prairie West students.”

White, meanwhile, left the district last week to work for the American Cancer Society.

While most school districts have just one athletic director, Middleton plans to continue with two.

MHS swimmers headed to state

With a stacked field, state of the art facility and a packed crowd on hand, Saturday’s WIAA Division 1 Verona boys’ swimming and diving sectional had the look and feel of a state meet. Middleton’s swim team took in the atmosphere and produced a state-worthy performance en route to a second-place finish at the new Verona Area Aquatic Center.First-place finishes from the 200- and 400-yard freestyle relay teams and two individual wins apiece from Nick Chirafisi and Jack Madoch propelled the Cardinals.

“We went really fast today and hopefully we get faster next week,” Middleton coach R.J. Leiferman said. “That’s always the goal.”

“We had a really, really good meet,” added Chirafisi. “It was great for us.”

Cards still in hunt for Big 8 title

There is little to no margin for error.

Not if Middleton’s boys basketball team hope to call themselves Big Eight Conference champions.

And the Cardinals made sure there were no slip-ups inside the league last week.

Middleton toppled host Craig, 69-61, on Feb. 8. The Cardinals then went to Verona and rallied past the Wildcats, 67-61, on Feb. 10.

Middleton also dropped a 65-55 decision at Brookfield Central last Saturday. But that game was part of the Big Eight/Greater Metro Conference Challenge and didn't hurt the Cardinals in the race for a Big Eight title.

Madison La Follette (14-4 overall, 13-2 in the Big Eight) leads Middleton (14-7, 12-3) by one game in the chase for the conference title. Sun Prairie (14-6, 10-5) is in third place and Madison East (11-8, 9-6) is in fourth.
