Eight Cardinals named all-Big 8

Eight is enough.

And eight is awfully impressive.

That’s how Middleton baseball manager Brent Jorgensen had to feel after eight of his Cardinals were named all-Big Eight Conference.

Senior utility player Easton Zempel and senior outfielder Stephen Paulsen were both named first-team all-Big Eight. Senior pitcher J.T. Hockers, senior third baseman Jaron Sarbacker and senior catcher Robby Erickson were all named second-team all-conference, while senior right fielder Matt Zimmerman, junior shortstop Hayden Hellenbrand and senior second baseman Preston Roell were all named honorable-mention all-conference.

Zempel, a Winona State recruit, batted .447 and had a .527 on-base percentage in conference games. Zempel had a slugging percentage of .681 with two home runs, three doubles, 14 RBI, seven walks and four stolen bases.

Zempel also threw 26.1 innings and had a 1.60 ERA. He struck out 30 batters and walked 12.

Girls softball team has five all-Big 8 players

They were one of the area’s surprise teams all season.

They finished third in the ultra-competitive Big Eight Conference and won their first regional title since 2014.

So it came as no surprise that Middleton’s softball team was extremely well-represented on the all-Big Eight Conference team.

Senior shortstop Jenna Redders was named first-team all-conference. Senior utility player Bailey Flock and freshman pitcher Megan Button were both named second-team all-league, while sophomore second baseman Mackenzie Zimmerman and sophomore right fielder McKenzie Pertzborn were named honorable-mention all-league.

Redders batted .474 with a sensational on-base percentage of .510. She had 15 extra base hits, 20 RBI, scored 28 runs and stole seven bases.

In addition, Redders was a terrific shortstop and an outstanding leader for a young Middleton team.

Middleton's HTL team moves to 6-0

Middleton’s Home Talent League team is creeping up on the midway point of the regular season.

And if the second half is anything like the first half, the 29ers are going to be thrilled with their summer.

Middleton won a pair of games last weekend and improved to 6-0 overall. The 29ers defeated Wisconsin Dells, 13-1, last Friday, then toppled Black Earth, 3-0, on Sunday.

Middleton has a two-game lead over both Ashton (3-1) and Black Earth (4-2) in the Northern Section’s East Division.

“Our pitching has really been our strength this year,” said Middleton manager Brandon Hellenbrand, whose team has given up just eight runs in six games this season. “We need to continue to pitch well and play good defense and the bats will come.”

Town Okays Short Term Rental

TOWN OF MIDDLETON–After living in a secluded subdivision for 22 years, Melissa and Casey Helbach sought a permit to rent out their house on a short-term basis while they travel.

Residents of Applewood Hills neighborhood’s 41 single-family homes, located off South Junction Road, prize their safety and told Town of Middleton Board of Supervisors Monday that the Helbachs’ request jeopardizes that.

“The primary concern I’ve heard from most folks revolves around safety,” David Huntsman, president of the Applewood Hills Homeowners Association said.

About half of the homeowners in this “tucked away neighborhood,” have children plus, there are no streetlights or sidewalks, he said. Residents know their neighbors and they would lose a sense of security if they started seeing strangers around their properties who aren’t properly vetted, said Huntsman.

Hangar Survey Questions Shaping Up.

MIDDLETON–The Middleton Airport Commission was facing a “chicken or the egg” dilemma last week as it considered survey questions to assess interest in possible hangar construction.

The quandary arose regarding including a question about whether to collect a $500 fee to be added on a waiting list for a new hangar.

Adding to the 44 hangars at Middleton Municipal Airport-Morey Field is one of the improvements in the Airport Master Plan the Common Council approved earlier this year.

Mayor Gurdip Brar said the city must know if there’s demand for more hangars and asking if survey respondents are willing to put up money in advance would constitute proof.

He also favored a $100 annual fee to remain on the list.

Commission vice-chair David Lorman took the other side of the issue saying the city needs to show a commitment to hangar construction to get people to put up money.
