Middleton wins Western Division

Job one is complete.

Now, Middleton’s Home Talent League team can begin concentrating on bigger and better things.

The 29ers won a pair of games last weekend, rolling past Plain, 9-0, on Saturday and downing Waunakee, 7-1, on Sunday.

Middleton improved to 11-0 and wrapped up the Northern Section’s East Division title.

“Overall, great weekend for us and really proud of the way the team played,” Middleton manager Brandon Hellenbrand said. “We're on the final stretch here with two (regular season) games left and need to make sure we finish strong as we head into playoffs.”

In Middleton’s win over Plain, Brady Schmitt picked up the win after allowing just one hit and no runs in seven innings. Schmitt also struck out seven.

Easton Zempel threw the last two innings and allowed two hits and no runs.

Black Earth knocks off Ashton

BLACK EARTH – When Shane Adler gets hot, the Ashton A’s veteran can carry a team.

Adler was on fire last Friday night, topping off a four-hit performance with his third home run of the season in Sunday League play and driving in two runs.

But Adler’s 4-for-4 performance wasn’t enough to keep host Black Earth at bay.

A one-two punch of starting pitcher Bryce Hopwood and reliever Tony Caminiti, a balanced offense along with a shut-down defense, sparked Black Earth to a 6-3 victory over visiting Ashton in a Home Talent League Northern Section Eastern Division baseball game.

The victory moved Black Earth (6-4) past Ashton (5-4) in the league standings and gave the Bombers the tiebreaker when it comes to seeding for postseason play. Black Earth earned a sweep of the A’s, following its 8-4 victory at Ashton on May 22.

Parks to Receive New Zoning Classifications

MIDDLETON–The City of Middleton is creating new zoning classifications for its parks to better reflect how the property is being and will be used, Abby Attoun, Director of Planning and Community Development told the Middleton Plan Commission last week.

The change follows “best practice(s)” used by planning professionals and would create the Neighborhood Park District for eight parks including Fireman’s, Parkside Heights, Stonefield, and Stricker, which are currently zoned residential.

“We have a pretty outdated zoning ordinance, it’s older than I am,” Attoun said at the June 28 meeting. The name changes allow the city to implement its Comprehensive Plan and “get things up to date and where they need to be.”

Comments from the public about the proposed change during the public hearing were favorable.

Middleton's 'Best of the Best'

The 2021-22 school year marked a return to normalcy for most of Middleton’s sports teams.

It also meant another year of tremendous success.

The Cardinals enjoyed terrific seasons and individual performances in a bevy of sports.

This week, we’ll honor Middleton’s girls, and next week we’ll recognize the boys.

Team of the Year: Cross country

Alexa Richardson had spent the previous 15 minutes fretting.

Richardson, Middleton’s girls cross country coach, was worried about the health of Maddie Ruszkiewicz, who collapsed and couldn't finish the WIAA Division 1 state meet on Oct. 30, 2021.

Richardson was unsure if her star-studded team had done enough to win a second straight state title. And Richardson was concerned about the mental state of her team, which had come to Ridges Golf Course in Wisconsin Rapids as overwhelming favorites, but were now sweating things out.

Hinson plays hero for Middleton

Josh Hinson was hitless in his first three trips to the plate Saturday afternoon, a pair of fly-outs and a strikeout spoiling his day.

The Middleton 29ers’ clean-up batter came through in a big way in his final at-bat.

Hinson’s one-out double in the bottom of the eighth inning cleared the bases, giving the 29ers a 4-3 lead over the Cross Plains Businessmen — a lead that would hold up for a victory by that same score in a match-up of East Division rivals in the Home Talent League’s Northern Section.

The icing on the cake? The big hit for Hinson came on the same day his family was celebrating his daughter Mila’s fifth birthday.

What did Mila think?

Hard to say.

“She probably wasn't even watching,” Hinson said. “She was probably off running around doing something.”

Newspaper Stuff

Hi everyone. I think this week is a good time for some house cleaning. So, let’s talk about some of the things going on at the Times-Tribune

First, I have gotten several comments about my new headshot for this column head. Particularly the pose with the side eye. That is one of my standard “looks” according to those who know me.

A few weeks ago, I went to Des Moines to attend my niece’s graduation. While I was there, I decided it a good idea to replace my ancient headshot, and asked my longtime friend and amazing photographer, Mindy Myers, to take them.

Once Mindy sent the photos, I went on Facebook and posted three pictures, asking which one my friends preferred. The consensus was that the side eye shot was the one that best expressed my personality. I agreed and decided that although it may not be appropriate for other professional needs, it was suitable for my column head.

The next thing I want to talk about is our high school interns.
