Proposed Town Budget Reduces Road Spending

TOWN OF MIDDLETON–The town board will present a proposed 2023 budget to residents next month that significantly reduces borrowing and slashes to road construction and maintenance expenses in response to declining government aid.

The proposed budget is funded by $4.795 million in total revenue, a sharp drop from the current budget’s revenue total of $6.432 million. Loan proceeds from borrowing is included in revenue totals, which in 2022, was budgeted at $1.176 million but next year’s proposed budget borrows $810,455 for construction projects.

Revenue from property taxes is projected to climb from $3.188 million this year to a projected $3.277 million next year. State transportation aid would increase slightly to $319, 000 but other local government grants, which totaled $498,00 this year, will disappear entirely next year.

Plan Commission Approves Cooper’s Hawk Building Plan

MIDDLETON–The City of Middleton Plan Commission approved the finalized building plan submitted by Cooper’s Hawk Winery and Restaurant. Cooper’s Hawk is planned to replace Tanner’s Bar and Grill and Maurices clothing store in Greenway Station at 1611 Deming Way.

Cooper’s Hawk representative Lauren Williams said Cooper’s Hawk offers a modern casual dining experience and a wine club with more than 500,000 members. The Middleton location would include a Napa style tasting room and artisanal market. There would also be a bar, main dining room, private dining space that could be rented out for events and a long patio.

The Middleton location would be the second Cooper’s Hawk to open Wisconsin behind Brookfield. The exterior design would be specific to Middleton to match the aesthetic of Greenway Station. Williams said the architecture would be in the style of modern rustic.

Tennis Cardinals shine at state

Netra Somasundaram led the way.

And Middleton’s girls tennis team enjoyed a terrific showing at the WIAA Division 1 individual state meet last weekend.

Somasundaram, Middleton’s No. 1 singles player, reached the quarterfinals before falling. The Cardinals also had two other singles players and two doubles teams give solid performances at the tournament.

“I am really proud of all the girls who qualified for the individual state tournament,” Middleton coach Matt Given said. “It was a huge achievement to have the most girls in the state playing this past weekend. Each girl left everything they had out there and I could not be more proud of them for that.”

Here’s how the Cardinals performed at state:

Boys soccer team wins Big 8 title

The countdown began back in early-September.

Middleton’s boys soccer team had just played Beloit Memorial to a disappointing draw. But Cardinals coach Kevin Pauls quickly convinced his team that a Big Eight Conference title was still quite possible.

“We talked since our Beloit tie that we had still had a chance to win the conference title,” Pauls said. “We knew with that tie, every game was basically a championship game.”

For the last six weeks, the Cardinals played like champions. And last Thursday, they completed their run to an improbable conference title.

Middleton defeated Sun Prairie East, 3-0, to capture its first Big Eight championhip since 2012. The Cardinals also toppled Madison East, 3-0, on Oct. 11.

Middleton finished 8-0-2 in the Big Eight, which gave it 26 points. Verona was second at 8-2-0 (24 points), while Madison Memorial was third at 7-1-2 (23 points).

Girls spikers win conference tourney

The postseason is here.

And Middleton’s girls volleyball team appears more than ready for what lies ahead.

The Cardinals rolled to the championship at the Big Eight Conference tournament last Saturday. Middleton went a perfect 4-0 on the day and didn't lose a set.

“We had a fun day at the conference tournament,” Middleton coach Maddie Vogel said. “We had high expectations going in, but were intentional about not taking anything for granted.

“You never know who’s going to show up any given day or match, and we knew we had to do our best to take care of business quick which is what we did. It’s always fun to get to see all the teams in conference in the same place, and my girls always enjoy getting to play against friends and peers from other schools in the conference.”

Here’s a recap of Middleton’s terrific showing at the conference meet.

Boys spikers win Big 8 tournament

For the first time all night, Middleton’s boys volleyball team was being challenged.

So head coach Rob Kleinschmidt called a timeout to deliver a message — emphatically so, such that most in the gym watching his Cardinals take on Madison Memorial in the finals of Friday’s Big Eight Conference tournament could hear.

“We’ve been dedicated to some certain things the last couple of weeks, and they’ve done a great job of getting better at it,” Kleinschmidt said of the impetus for the message. “And they came out tonight and really did an outstanding job all night, and then in the last set against Memorial they were kind of playing trying to just let points happen without having to put in the same work. So basically, it was a loud reminder that they needed to put in the work.

And?

“It didn’t quite work,” he said. “So the next time we quietly reminded them they needed to put in the work and they responded much better to that.”

Boys spikers land No. 1 seed

Middleton’s boys volleyball team hasn’t been to the state tournament in traditional (non-COVID) year since 2018.

But the Cardinals’ mini-drought could come to an end this year.

Middleton received the No. 1 seed in its sectional and has a clear path to the state tournament.

The Cardinals received a first round bye, then host either fourth-seeded Madison La Follette or fifth-seeded Edgewood/Madison Country Day in a sectional semifinal Oct. 25.

If the Cardinals win there, they’ll advance to the sectional finals on Oct. 29 in Middleton. The Cardinals’ most likely opponent in the sectional finals would be second-seeded Madison Memorial or third-seeded Madison West.

“The guys have been working hard to improve this season,” Middleton coach Rob Kleinschmidt said. “I am proud of them for their efforts, which has also earned them the No. 1 seed in our sectional.”

Boys XC team second at Big 8 meet

Seniors Joe Schwartz and Dean Montour provided a solid one-two punch at the top of the lineup for Middleton’s boys cross country team last Saturday.

But the Cardinals’ mission of taking back the Big Eight Conference team championship it lost a year ago after a three-year reign came up just one point short on a crisp, sun-splashed fall morning last Saturday at Sheehan Park in Sun Prairie.

Defending champion Madison West placed all five of its scoring runners in the top 17 to win the team title with 60 points. Schwartz finished fifth and Montour placed sixth to help the Cardinals repeat as runners-up with 61 points.

“It was bittersweet,” Middleton coach Brian Finnel said of the Cardinals’ near miss at recapturing the title. “But we were still pretty pumped to be down by only one point. We knew West would be tough and so would Verona. They were pretty close behind so it’s going to be a battle next weekend at sectionals.”
