Board Discusses Resignations, Referendum Passing

MIDDLETON–Resignations and “retirements” have created five openings on next April’s ballot for Middleton Cross Plains Area School District Board of Education.

Long-term members Annette Ashley, 12 years, and Paul Kinne, nine years, both representing Area IV, said Monday that they will not seek reelection.

Newly appointed members Tabitha Hansen and Catherine Kells told Board President Bob Hesselbein that they would seek election next spring. Hansen is an Area III representative, and Kells is an Area II representative. Bob Green, Area II, also said he would seek reelection.

There were many thank you(s) voiced at Monday’s board meeting after the prior week’s successful referendum.

“It wasn’t close,” Hesselbein said of the outcome, in which nearly 63 percent of more than 23,000 votes cast approved the $24.9 million operational referendum.

Long Voting Lines Concern Town of Middleton Residents

TOWN OF MIDDLETON–Voters in the Town of Middleton waited in long lines, sometimes nearing three hours, when casting their ballots last week.

Those that waited said that people in line were patient, courteous and friendly to one another during the wait, but they also want to know how this happened, and what measures can be taken to ensure it doesn’t happen again.

Steve Kurr who has lived in the Town of Middleton since 2005 timed his wait with his son, which clocked in at two hours and 55 minutes. “I have never waited more than 10 minutes,” he said of previous voting experiences in the town.

Kurr said he was surprised by the wait but added that it was worth it.

“We feel it is important to vote and vote every time,” he said.

He said he didn’t witness anyone leave, but he said people were good about saving spots for others when they left the line and allowing elderly and disabled voters to go ahead of them in line.

Football Cards dominate all-Big Eight team

Middleton’s football team had another tremendous season.

The Cardinals reached the postseason for the 26th consecutive season, which is tied for the longest streak in Division 1 with Hartland Arrowhead. Middleton won a playoff game for the third straight season and fifth time in six years.

The Cardinals finished second in the Big Eight Conference. And while their 7-4 overall record might now have wowed anyone, their four losses came against team that went a combined 31-4.

So, it came as no surprise that Middleton was remarkably well-represented on the all-Big Eight Conference team.

The Cardinals had nine players named first-team all-Big Eight, nine named second-team all-conference and five more earn honorable-mention all-league honors. In all, that’s a whopping 23 spots on the all-conference team that consisted of a Middleton player.

Girls swimmers, divers fourth at state

WAUKESHA — Sophie Benson spent four memorable seasons inside Middleton’s girls swimming and diving program.

There were three top-six team finishes at the WIAA Division 1 state meet during traditional seasons. There was a runner-up showing in the very non-traditional 2020-21 COVID year, when the Cardinals moved their season to the spring.

And there were countless laughs, smiles and memories.

So when it came to an end last Saturday — with the Cardinals racing to a fourth place finish at this year’s state meet held inside Waukesha South High School — it was a bittersweet time for Benson and her fellow seniors.

Middleton had given another memorable performance, challenging the state powerhouses for pool supremacy once again. But the finality of it all was also tough for Benson to wrap her head around.

Cardinals hope to surprise

Some years the cupboard is full. And others it’s in the process of being restocked.

That’s the nature of high school sports -- kids graduate, new kids get opportunities and so on and so forth.

The Middleton prep girls basketball team needed to go grocery shopping this offseason.

And the shopping list, it turned out, also included a head coach after Wisconsin Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Famer Jeff Kind resigned over the summer, ending his 30-year tenure at the helm for the Cardinals.

But the Cardinals won’t begin the 2022-23 campaign -- it kicks off Thursday on the road against Madison Memorial -- from scratch entirely. New coach Rashard Griffith, a University of Wisconsin men’s basketball standout in the mid-1990s who then had a lengthy professional career overseas, will have first team All-Big Eight senior guard Audrey Deptula to build around.
