Paul L. “Growler” Kalscheur

CROSS PLAINS–Dad enjoyed reading and shared an article titled, “Laughter Makes You Live Longer.” He said, “If that’s true, I’ll live a long life.” The Jolly Ole Fellow, with a hearty laugh, wore out on Dec. 2, 2022, at the age of 87.

His journey started on Oct. 25, 1935, when he was born to John H. and Marcella A. (Bowar). Dad graduated from Middleton High School in 1954. He often bragged about being part of Middleton High School’s first state championship football team in 1953. After graduation, he served his country as a tank mechanic in the US Army. Upon returning home he continued to serve as a member of the American Legion Post 245, a volunteer with Cross Plains-Berry Fire Department, and a member of St. Francis Xavier Church.

District to Halt Busing St. Francis Students

MIDDLETON–A chronic shortage of bus drivers has prompted the Middleton-Cross Plains Area School District to stop busing St. Francis Xavier (SFX) school children beginning next month.

“They are sad (that) we have to take this step, (they) understand it and they are working with us, which is wonderful,” Superintendent Dana Monogue said at Monday’s Board of Education meeting about the Cross Plains’ parochial school’s response.

State law obligates the district is to transport students to another school within the district if their parents choose to have their children attend another school.

The district’s decision affects 36 families, she added.

The district will contract with parents to transport students to the 4K-8 grade school effective its suspension of bus service on Jan. 24, 2023, the start of the second semester.

Council Take Next Step on Energy Efficiency Navigator Program, Approves Public Art Funding Program, Ends Covid-19 Public Emergency

MIDDLETON–The Middleton Common Council continued work on developing its first energy efficiency navigator program that will provide energy assessments and funding to update old apartment buildings and lower utility costs for tenants. The council approved a program that will provide a portion of funding from TIF funded projects for public art and set March 1 as the end of the public emergency related to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Michelle Phillips, chair of the city’s arts committee, said the committee has been working on the TIF funding proposal for more than two years. Phillips is also the editor for the Middleton Cross Plains Times-Tribune.

“When I'm out in the community, one of the things that I hear is that the public wants more art and we just don't have the funding to do that,” Phillips said. “As many of you know, funding has been further cut in the last few years and this attaches funding to TIF funds.”

Hockey Cards off to flying start

Middleton’s boys hockey team hasn’t cracked the Wisconsin Prep Hockey rankings yet.

But if the Cardinals keep playing like they have to start the season, it won’t be long.

Middleton improved to 6-0 overall and 3-0 in the Big Eight Conference last week.

The Cardinals defeated host Sun Prairie 4-3, on Dec. 8. Middleton cruised past visiting Janesville, 7-1, on Dec. 6.

And earlier in conference play, Middleton rolled by Madison Memorial, 11-2, on Dec. 1.

Here’s a recap of the Cardinals’ recent wins and their fast start to the 2022-23 season.

• Middleton 4, Sun Prairie 3 — Wyatt Ehrhardt had a pair of goals to power Middleton in a battle of Big Eight Conference powers. Drew Sjowall and Brady Engelkes also had goals for Middleton.

MHS boys off to terrific start

Even in the best of times, trips to Madison East aren’t much fun.

The Purgolders typically have a loaded roster. Their gym is compact. The fans are passionate and boisterous.

But there might not be a while lot that can slow the train known as Middleton’s boys basketball team this season. Certainly not a trip over to East.

The Cardinals, ranked No. 4 in the latest Wissports.net poll, went to East on Dec. 6, and hammered the Purgolders, 81-53. It was Middleton’s largest win at East in at least 20 years.

The Cardinals improved to 3-0 overall and in the Big Eight Conference. East is now 2-2, 2-1.

“We have to continue to evolve and stay ‘Team First’ as teams scout more and more and try to come up with ways to keep the ball out of the lane against us,” Middleton coach Kevin Bavery said. “We’re pleased early on, but have a long, long ways to go.”

Gymnasts have great expectations

Alexis Lindahl thought her gymnastics days might be over.

The one-time Kenosha-standout dabbled in college while she went to college. But the COVID season — and Lindahl’s passion for teaching — had her thinking gymnastics might be in the rearview mirror.

Not so fast.

Lindahl spent last season as an assistant coach at Middleton High School. And when the varsity job opened this past offseason, Lindahl attacked it the way she once would a floor routine.

Thus starts a new chapter in the long and storied history of Middleton gymnastics. And Lindahl hopes she can help add some new pages to what’s been a terrific story.

“I’m super excited,” Lindahl said of taking over the program.

Middleton is just excited to have Lindahl running the show.

Lindahl was a highly successful club gymnast as a youth in Kenosha. During that time, she won three state all-around titles and competed in the regional competition in South Dakota.

MHS swimmers win Brookfield Invite

The hype is much more than just hot air.

It’s real. Very real.

And Middleton’s boys swimming team proved just that Saturday by winning the star-studded Brookfield Invitational.

The Cardinals finished with 620 points at the nine-team invite. Madison Memorial (508), Arrowhead (431), Brookfield’s co-op (320) and Sun Prairie West (210) rounded out the top five.

“The meet went really well,” Middleton first-year coach Wes Lagerhausen said. “I am happy with how we competed as a team.”

There was a lot to be proud of.

Middleton’s 200-yard medley relay team of senior Theo Wolf, freshman Sam Wolf, junior Cowan Vitense and freshman Max Carter finished first, nearly 2 seconds ahead of Madison Memorial’s second place quartet.

MHS girls notch two wins

The schedule is about to intensify.

But Middleton’s girls basketball team has put itself in terrific position inside the Big Eight Conference.

The Cardinals rolled to a pair of wins last week — a 69-22 victory at Janesville Parker on Dec. 8 and a 90-51 rout of visiting Beloit Memorial last Saturday.

The Cardinals improved to 5-2 overall and are 5-1 in the conference. Middleton sits in a tie for second place in the league with Madison La Follette and Sun Prairie West, ½-game behind conference-leading Verona (5-0, 5-1).

In Middleton’s win over Beloit Memorial, senior guard Audrey Deptula had a sensational game with a career-high 34 points that included a remarkable 31-point first half. In all, Deptula drained five 3-pointers and was a one-person wrecking crew much of the night.
