Deep, gifted golf team keeps shining

Tom Cabalka might have one of the toughest jobs in the state right now.

But no one is crying for Middleton’s boys golf coach.

You see, Cabalka has eight, nine, even 10 players that are worthy of being on the Cardinals’ five-man varsity roster.

So picking a top-five for each event is a tough gig.

“It's a good problem to have,” Cabalka said.

Cabalka did an awfully good job last week as the Cardinals had a pair of stellar performances.

Middleton won its own triangular held at Pleasant View Golf Course on April 12. The Cardinals shot a 312 to easily outdistance runner-up Sun Prairie West (352) and Madison West (361).

Amazingly, Middleton’s JV team shot 320 on the same day and would have rolled to a win at the triangular.

MHS names Poehls, Simon as interim football coaches

Option one said no thanks.

Option two chose not to interview.

So after Middleton athletic director Jamie Sims had two external candidates turn down the Cardinals’ head football coaching job, he looked internally.

On Tuesday, Middleton named Joe Poehls and Tim Simon as interim co-head coaches for the 2023 season. Both men were assistant coaches in the program the last several years.

The duo will replace Jason Pertzborn, who resigned on Jan. 26 in the midst of a bullying scandal.

In the time since, McFarland defensive coordinator Brian Hellenbrand was offered the position, then declined it on March 28.

Middleton then re-opened the interview process and targeted Eau Claire Regis coach Bryant Brenner. Brenner opted not to interview, though, and Sims then turned to Poehls and Simon.

County to Vote on Jail Consolidation Project

DANE COUNTY–The Dane County Supervisors are poised to vote on the construction of a new Dane County Jail at their meeting on April 20.

The board will vote on resolutions that would approve additional funding for the project without a referendum or additional taxes to residents. 2022 RES-287 would allow the board to funnel leftover funds from the Terminal 19 Modernization project ($3,359,1130) and the CNG Trailer project ($6,598,000) into the jail budget. 2023 RES-13 would increase the budget amount by $13.5 million for general obligation bonds.

In a memo to the board on March 27, Dane County Executive Joe Parisi urged supervisors to vote for the resolutions to get construction started on the project which the board has discussed since the 1990s. At that time the board heard plans for adding on to the existing jail. Since then, little has been done to update the facility, making for sometimes unsafe conditions for residents and staff.

Pilof picks Rutgers

The third time proved to be a charm for Sam Pilof.

Pilof, a junior linebacker at Middleton High School, took an unofficial recruiting visit to the Rutgers University campus in Piscataway, N.J. this past weekend.

On Saturday, Pilof took a big weight off of his shoulders when he verbally committed to head coach Greg Schiano to play football for the Scarlet Knights as a member of the 2024 recruiting class.

“It feels great. It’s hard to explain,” Pilof, said during a phone call on Sunday before he returned home. “Now I can just focus on my senior season and try and improve myself.”

After trimming his list of suitors to three, including the University of Wisconsin and Penn State University, Pilof said that he was prepared to make a decision during his third trip to the Rutgers’ campus.

He didn’t hesitate when asked ‘Why Rutgers?’

Commission Passes on Unleaded Gas Incentive

MIDDLETON–The Airport Commission last week passed on an opportunity to lower the price of unleaded aviation gas when it’s offered for sale at Middleton Municipal Airport-Morey Field.

The commission debated then decided against recommending that Common Council waive the 10¢ per gallon fuel flowage fee the city collects on fuel sold at the airport.

An additional 6¢ per gallon is collected and paid to the state of Wisconsin.

This year, the fuel flowage fee is expected to generate about $8,000 in revenue, according to Richard Morey, airport manager whose firm, Morey Airplane Co. is the airport’s fixed- base operator.

City Administrator Bryan Gadow opened discussion last Thursday saying he expected that this would be the first of a couple discussions about the fee.

School Board Hears Recommendation for 6% Salary Increase

MIDDLETON–A six percent salary increase was recommended Monday for all Middleton Cross Plains Area School District (MCPASD) teachers, staff and administrators for the 2023-24 academic year.

The increase was presented by the district’s finance staff which said it was needed to remain competitive and reach the 75th percentile for salary and wages paid by Dane County schools.

The cost to the district would be $4.33 million, according to information the district supplied.

Teachers and staff received a 5.5 percent total compensation package increase for the current school year, which school board and Middleton Education Association members said was the first significant wage bump in some time.

Under the salary proposal, annual pay for teachers with a bachelor’s degree increases from $45,126 this year to $47,500 in 2023-24. Salary for teachers with a master’s degree would increase from $51,126 to $53,500 in the same period.

Council Approves Final Building Plan for Eight Story Apartment Buildings in Greenway Center

MIDDLETON–The Middleton Common Council approved a specific implementation plan (SIP) for the proposed Rockridge development at 1551 Pleasant View Rd. in the Greenway Center area. The council unanimously approved the plan with several contingencies that will need to be addressed before building permits can be issued.

The proposal from developer LZ Ventures calls for constructing three, eight story residential buildings in a vacant 5.08-acre lot in Greenway Center south of the PPD campus and north of the Le Silve Apartments and Bella Casa Condominiums. Each building would contain 121 to 125 units with a total of 371 units in the total development. Each building would also have two levels of underground parking.

The site was previously part of the Greenway Center planned development district (PDD) but was never developed. The site was rezoned creating a new PDD during the approval of the general implementation plan.

Jackson Elected First African American City Alder

MIDDLETON–District 5 alder-elect Jeffrey Jackson made history on April 4 when he became the first African American elected to the Middleton City Council.

Jackson, who ran unopposed said he was very proud and excited about the win. “Emily Kuhn (mayor elect) wanted me to run a few years ago, but I wasn’t ready,” Jackson said.

It still took some convincing for Jackson, who has worked as an activist throughout his life.

“I’m usually the one yelling at the politicians,” he laughed.

During the campaign he had the support of both Kuhn and District 5 Alder Luke Fuszard. “It is important to me to not just talk about diversity, but also act upon it,” said Fuszard. “When I met Jeff, started talking to him and watched him interact with his children, I knew he would be a great fit.”

Jackson, who works as General Manager at Chili’s West Madison, said the campaigning wasn’t without strife.
