Engling excited to play for Princeton

Middleton boys volleyball player Ambrose Engling was highly recruited heading into his upcoming senior season from schools like Princeton, USC, and UC-San Diego.

Engling eventually chose Princeton, and one reason is he loved the culture.

“It started around my U-16 year, and it picked up quickly,” Engling said recently. “The process of me starting to be recruited to committing to Princeton took less than a year.”

Engling is coming off a terrific junior season in which he was named first-team all-Eight Conference after leading Middleton in kills (233) and posting a kill percentage of .376. Engling also tied for the team lead in aces (45), was second in blocks (37) and fourth in digs (59).

Engling helped lead Middleton to the state tournament, where he posted a match-high 21 kills against eventual state champion Waukesha Catholic Memorial.

Farrell powers 29ers past Ashton

ASHTON – It has been a changing of the guard this season for the Middleton 29ers, like many other teams in the Home Talent League.

Despite numerous roster changes, an infusion of new, young talent has bolstered the 29ers, who have remained one of the elite programs in the Northern Section.

When they needed him most, though, veteran ace right-hander Drew Farrell brought his ‘A’ game in tossing a complete-game, eight-hit shutout in a 1-0 victory over host Ashton last Sunday.

Middleton’s victory in the Northern Section Eastern Division regular-season finale secured the No. 2 seed for the 29ers in the HTL playoffs, which begin on Sunday. The 29ers, who finished the regular season 11-2, will host seventh-seeded Wisconsin Dells (6-7) at 1 p.m.

Rogeberg to be reinstated, but timeline is unclear

Brad Rogeberg got the outcome he was longing for.

When that goes into effect, though, remains a mystery.

Rogeberg lost his job as the head strength and conditioning coordinator at Middleton High School and as the Cardinals’ defensive coordinator following the bullying scandal inside Middleton’s football program last season.

After a July 12 meeting, though, with superintendent Dana Monogue, principal Peg Shoemaker and athletic director Jamie Sims, Rogeberg was told he’ll be reinstated as the strength and conditioning coordinator.

“I’m really excited,” Rogeberg said Monday. “I’m just really looking forward to getting back to what I enjoy.”

While Rogeberg was giddy to get his weight room job back, it’s unclear when that will happen.

The Middleton-Cross Plains Area School District Communications Department issued a statement saying that while Rogeberg will eventually return to his prior duties, it’s uncertain when that will be.

Plan Commission Approves New Development, Reviews Concept Proposals for Two More

MIDDLETON–The City of Middleton Plan Commission approved a rezoning request and general building plan for a seven-story, mixed-use building in Greenway Center. The plan commission also reviewed and provided feedback on a conceptual proposal for a 12-story residential building in Greenway and a six-story, mixed-use building on Allen Boulevard.

The rezoning request and general implementation plan recommended for approval by the common council calls for a demolition of the existing two office buildings (the Ponds Buildings) at 8309 and 8313 Greenway Blvd. and construction of a seven-story mixed-use building. The project would include five stories of residential units above two stories of parking and commercial space. There would be 249 total residential units, 4,800 square feet of commercial/retail space, and 353 parking spaces. All the parking would be covered and there will be no surface level parking stalls.

State Budget Helps School Finances

MIDDLETON–The state budget giveth and taketh away from the Middleton Cross Plains Area School District (MCPASD), Finance Director Erin Wheeler told the Board of Education Monday.

The recently signed state 2023-25 biennium budget adds $3.025 million in district revenue but also increases expenses linked to changes in open enrollment policies and tuition vouchers.

Revenue increases are led by a $2.3 million increase in the tax levy limit authorized by the state. A slight increase in state aid for special education instruction adds about $500,000, and mental health aid adds $225,000, Wheeler said.

Expenses due to changes in tuition voucher and open enrollment policies increases spending by a combined $400,000 in voucher tuition, independent charter school tuitions and special education tuition.

School Hosts ‘Drive a Bus’ Event in Search for Drivers

MIDDLETON–Kevin Schaefer was dismayed to learn last year that his son couldn’t attend an out-of-town athletic event because the Middleton Cross Plains Area School District (MCPASD) didn’t have a bus driver available.

That’s why Schaefer, a commercial driver, attended last week’s “Drive a Bus” school bus driver recruitment event.

“I couldn’t help out before because I was an over-the-road driver and logged too many hours during the week that I didn’t have the hours remaining to drive on weekends,” he said.

“Now, I’m more of a ‘yard dog’ and I don’t have to keep track of hours so, I’d like to be able to drive occasionally,” he said as he entered the district’s transportation office.

New Apartment Building Will Offer 80% Affordable Housing Units

MIDDLETON–A ceremony for the Mill Apartments was held in Middleton on July 12, marking the construction of the 52-unit complex that will offer 80 percent of its units for affordable housing.

The Mill Apartments are under construction at 6908 Century Ave. which positions the units close to shopping, parks and schools, as well as being on the bus route.

The Madison Development Corporation (MDC), a 45-year-old, non-profit organization, is heading up the project. The units will be available for working families and individuals. MDC says its mission is to “provide quality workforce housing in the region. “They currently own and manage 76 units on Allen Boulevard in Middleton.

"This project has been a collaborative effort between MDC and the city to bring more workforce housing to Middleton. These 52 units are well-placed. They’re on a transit corridor, they’re next to a grocery store, and they’re in a great school system,” said Middleton Mayor Emily Kuhn.

On July 15 at 10:09 p.m., the Middleton Police Department responded to a report of an armed robbery that had just occurred near the intersection of N. Gateway Street and Charing Cross Lane.

An adult male and a 16-year-old female were on a walk when they were confronted by a male suspect who emerged from some bushes near the sidewalk. The suspect displayed a handgun and demanded the victim’s wallet. The victims were not injured, and the suspect fled in an unknown direction from the scene with an undisclosed amount of cash.

The suspect is described as a thin black male in his 30s, approximately 6 feet tall, with “cornrow” style hair and a short beard.  He was wearing long black pants and a plain black t-shirt.
