MHS golfers headed back to state

‘The Streak’ is impressive, remarkable and astonishing all rolled into one.

And most importantly, ‘The Streak’ is still alive.

Middleton’s girls golf team won the DeForest Sectional on Tuesday and clinched a spot at the WIAA Division 1 state tournament for the 14th straight year.

The Cardinals fired a 323 at Lake Windsor Country Club and edged host DeForest (328) for the sectional championship. Madison Edgewood (345), Waunakee (347) and Oregon (372) rounded out the top five.

Only the top two teams qualified for state, which will be held Monday and Tuesday at University Ridge.

“It means so much to our team to be heading back to state,” Middleton coach Becky Halverson said. “The girls have worked incredibly hard all season, and this is a great reward for their consistency, teamwork, and determination.”

Evan Kratochwill Invite a rousing success

CROSS PLAINS — It was an event that Evan Kratochwill would have loved to compete in, albeit without the 80-degree temperatures.

But the fourth annual Evan Kratochwill Memorial Invitational last Saturday drew not only a competitive cross-country field that featured several state-ranked teams, but also hundreds of supporters who turned out on a sun-splashed October morning to honor the spirit of the late Middleton runner.

“Most of the girls have ‘For Evan’ written on their legs. We’re running for him today,” said Middleton senior Olivia Chellevold, who won the varsity girls 5,000-meter race to lead the host Cardinals to a runner-up finish.

“They’re doing this meet in his memory. We put on a great fun run meet this morning and cheered really, hard for that. It really means a lot that we can run in his memory.”

Girls spikers fare well at Neenah Invite

Middleton girls volleyball coach Ben White made a concerted effort this season to increase the Cardinals’ strength of schedule.

White’s belief is that approach will help his Cardinals when it comes to postseason seeding — and perhaps playoff performance.

Middleton’s trip to the Neenah Invite on Oct. 4 certainly qualifies as a schedule booster.

Several of the state’s top teams were on hand — including No. 2 Oconomowoc. So even though the Cardinals went 2-2 overall, White believes that experience will pay dividends down the road.

“This year we looked to increase the difficulty of our schedule compared to the past two years as I am hoping that it better prepares the girls for the postseason,” White said. “The Neenah Invite definitely fits the bill.”

Middleton opened with an impressive 25-14, 25-11 win over DePere.

MHS boys spikers roll past Spartans

The best boys volleyball team in the state had just one match last week.

But Middleton had an impressive showing in a 25-19, 25-16, 25-20 win over Madison Memorial on Sept. 29.

The No. 1-ranked Cardinals improved to 27-0 overall and 5-0 in the Big Eight Conference. The win was even more impressive considering the Cardinals had won the star-studded Middleton Invitational just two days earlier.

“Overall, I thought we performed pretty well given the circumstances of the day we were playing,” Middleton coach Dylan Griffith said. “Coming off our weekend home tournament (championship) and playing six matches just two days prior, we had to jump right back in with another conference match.

“The last two years against (Memorial) we had extended the match longer than necessary with some tired play. This year I was pleasantly surprised with how we responded.”

Middleton started the match slowly, but picked up steam as it unfolded.
