David A. Wieckert, Professor Emeritus

MIDDLETON–David A. Wieckert, age 88, passed away on May 17, 2020. He was born on Aug. 7, 1931, the son of Walter Hans and Anita (Brockman) Wieckert of Appleton. David obtained a Ph.D. at the UW–Madison in 1963. The next 33 years were spent as a professor in the Dairy Science Department at the University of Wisconsin, where he taught 10,228 students.

On June 30, 1963, David married Joan (Engle) Wieckert in Abilene, KN. They met in 1952 when they traveled to Sweden and Denmark, respectively, as International 4-H Youth Exchanges. This interest in people of other nations continued for a lifetime of travel and entertaining internationals in their home.

Mary Jo Matz

EDGERTON–Mary Jo Matz, age 86, of Edgerton, passed away on May 11, 2020, at home. She was born in Madison on February 11, 1934, the daughter of Vernie and Florence (Stormer) Miller. She married Donald A. Matz on March 21, 1953 at St. Luke Lutheran, Middleton. He preceded her in death on February 1, 2009. She enjoyed sewing, gardening and babysitting. She was well known to be stubborn “on occasion.” Her biggest passion in life was spending time with her family, especially her grandkids. She was a member of Central Lutheran Church.

Richard R. Myers

MIDDLETON/JANESVILLE–Richard R. Myers of Middleton and formerly of Janesville passed away peacefully at Heritage Senior Living on January 11, 2020 at 91 years of age.

He was born in Madison, N.J. on September 6, 1928 to Waldo and Ruth Myers. The youngest of five siblings, Richard attended Madison schools and Phillips Preparatory School in Andover N.J. before entering Cornell University in Ithaca N.Y. He graduated with a BA and MBA. Richard was active in glee club, played sax in a jazz and big band, and played on the last Cornell soccer team to win the national championship. There he met his wife-to-be, Ursula Sennewald. He and Ursula were married on June 12, 1951, in Elmira N.Y.

Richard served in the US Air Force as a Lieutenant during the Korean War. He was sent to Okinowa, where Ursula joined him and their first child was born.

Muriel Jane (Smith) Eid

MIDDLETON–Muriel Jane (Smith) Eid, age 90, of Middleton, passed away after a long battle with Alzheimer’s on April 23, 2020, at Sebring Assisted Living/Memory Care in Madison. 

Muriel was born on June 20, 1929 to Fred J. and Margaret (Wilkinson) Smith. She grew up in Sherrill, NY across the street from her father’s hardware store where she often led her schoolmates past the candy counter for a treat and helped herself to a doll baby buggy at Christmastime.

Following graduation from Sherrill High School, “Smitty” graduated from Plattsburgh Teachers College with a BS in Education and later earned her MS in Education at Queen’s College in New York, NY

Muriel taught kindergarten in Great Neck on Long Island, NY, and Monterey, CA. In 1960, she met her special husband, Vernon Walter Eid, at an officer’s club dance in Kaiserslautern, Germany, where they both were teachers at the US Military base.

Francis G. "Frank" Ryan

MIDDLETON–Francis G. ("Frank") Ryan Jr., died unexpectedly on April 10, 2020 of cardiac arrest.  Born and raised in Chicago, Frank graduated from Sullivan High School in 1954 and enlisted in the United States Army in 1955 where he served nearly three years.

He graduated from Marquette University in 1962 and married Claire McMahon, a teacher at Marquette, in New York City later that year.

Hired by United Press International (UPI), Frank spent two years in their Milwaukee Bureau and transferred to Madison in 1966. As Bureau Chief and political reporter, he covered the Governor's Office and State Legislature, news stories of a tumultuous era, and sports. Frank's twice weekly commentaries appeared in newspapers statewide, and he wrote for Madison Magazine.

Edna Kathryn (Schroeder) Healy

CEDAR FALLS, IA–Edna Kathryn (Schroeder) Healy, 95, went home to be with her Lord and Friend on March 30, 2020.

Edna was born on April 30, 1924, to August and Elsie (Koepcke) Schroeder on a farm near Verona, and six months later her family moved to a farm on University Avenue in Middleton.  Edna graduated from Middleton High School in 1941 and attended Madison Business College.

In 1944, Edna married Harry Burdette Healy from River Falls. They were married for 63 years.  She worked for 25 years at the Middleton Piggly Wiggly (later Eagle) where she was head cashier. Edna cherished her many friends and she always enjoyed remembering them with a card or with her famous cookies.

Edna and Harry were blessed with two children, Annelle Eickhoff (Ben) and Michael (Billie), six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Charles "Zeke" Doll

MIDDLETON–Charles "Zeke” Doll, age 65, of Middleton, passed away surrounded by his loving family on April 3, 2020. 

Charles "Zeke" is survived by his wife, Mary Anne; daughter, Marcella (Karl) Jakobsen; sons, Matthew (Amy) Doll and Michael (Erin) Doll; grandsons, Cooper Doll and Grayson Doll; granddaughters, Nora Doll and Natalie Doll; sisters, Barbara Johnson and Donna Chan; brothers, Dug Doll and Timothy Doll; and other relatives and friends.  He was preceded in death by his parents. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.  

Burial will be held at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery in Waterloo. Online condolences may be made at gundersonfh.com.

Craig W. Hanson

MOUNT HOREB/MIDDLETON–Craig W. Hanson, age 77, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on March 3, 2020 at Agrace HospiceCare, Fitchburg, after a long courageous battle with COPD and a third bout of cancer. Craig’s deep love for his family helped him survive cancer two times over the last 23 years and for that he was deeply grateful and spent as much time as he could with his wife, four children and six grandchildren, that were his greatest joy.  

Born March 15, 1942, Craig grew up in the Madison area and graduated from West High School, 1960, and UW-Madison in 1967, with a B.S. in Economics.  In 1972, Craig started his own business, Hanson Accounting, providing a customized service to a client base that stayed with him for over 45 years. Craig deeply valued the friendships he built over the decades with many of his clients, never fully retiring, he loved his work.

Marie C. Medina

MADISON–Marie C. Medina, age 102, of Madison, passed away on March 6, 2020 at home surrounded by her family. She was born on December 23, 1917, in Oxnard, CA, the daughter of Jesus Cabral and Carmen (Chairez) Cabral. She married Jose Guadalupe Medina on February 12, 1939 in Los Angeles, CA and they had 12 beautiful children. Marie and Jose celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in Mexico in 1989 with all of their children present.
