Broken Force Main Causes 84,000-gallon Sewage Spill

MAZOMANIE - A “bubbling manhole” was spotted on Walter Road near the railroad tracks the evening of Friday, June 26, which upon inspection revealed a broken force main inside. “Upon arrival from our crew,” Dane- Iowa Wastewater Treatment Facility Lab Manager and Operator Mitch Travis wrote in an email, “sewage was seen inconsistently discharging from our force main manhole.” The crew “quickly discovered that a 14-inch sanitary sewer force main blew a hole through the top of the pipe.”

Middleton Public Library Deputy Director Reflects on Big Brother Big Sister Program

For over 60 years, Big Brother Big Sister (BBBS) Dane County has paired children ages 6-18 with adults in the community with the hope of creating mentor relationships to last a lifetime. After the “Little” brothers and sisters grow up and age out of the program, the choice of continuing their relationship with their “Bigs” is left up to the pairs to decide. But for Katharine Clark, Deputy Director of the Middleton Public Library and “Big Sister” to 20-year old Alivia Moon, it wasn’t a choice at all.

MHS Social Studies Teacher Raises Funds for First Ever Student Tour to Ghana, West Africa

For just over a decade, Middleton High School Social Studies teacher Andy Hartman has led students on study tours across Europe, Asia and the Caribbean. These trips have given hundreds of MHS students the chance to learn social studies and world history not just in classrooms, but through real life experience. But since the first tour in 2009, the opportunity has been exclusive — with steep price tags, limited scholarship options and destinations restricted by travel safety guidelines. Hartman is on a mission to change that.

Middleton's 'Best of the Best'

State championships in volleyball, swimming and golf.

A state runner-up finish in tennis.

And conference titles in football, volleyball, swimming, basketball, wrestling and golf.

Yowza!

What a year it was for Middleton’s boys sports programs in the 2025-26 school year.

In addition to remarkable team success, the Cardinals had countless individual athletes shine. Middleton also had perhaps its finest group of senior athletes in the nearly 30 years we’ve been running this column.

That made picking Middleton’s ‘Best of the Best’ harder than ever, but we gave it our best shot.

This week, we’ll honor the boys, and next week we’ll award the girls.
