In the movie “Anchorman”, Will Ferrell’s character Ron Burgundy and his news team brawl with other news groups led by Vince Vaughn, Luke Wilson, Tim Robbins and Ben Stiller.

When the melee ends, Farrell said to his victorious news team, “Boy, that escalated quickly. I mean, that really got out of hand fast.”

That’s how Janesville Craig’s football team had to feel last Friday night.

Middleton led the host Cougars, 24-17, with 8 ½ minutes left in their Big Eight Conference game. The Cardinals then erupted for 28 unanswered points in just 4 ½ minutes and cruised home to a 52-24 win.

Middleton won its third straight game and improved to 3-2 overall, 3-0 in the Big Eight. The Cardinals now host Verona (3-0, 4-1) Friday at 7 p.m. in a matchup of Big Eight co-leaders.

Craig fell to 1-2, 2-3.

It was a quiet week for the state’s No. 1 ranked boys volleyball team.

But Middleton’s top ranked squad had another impressive performance in their lone match.

The Cardinals rolled past Fort Atkinson, 25-15, 25-14, 25-20, on Sept. 16. Middleton improved to 18-1 as the season hits roughly the midway point.

"We had a great game vs. Fort Atkinson,” Middleton coach Dylan Griffith said. “The guys did a great job honing in on some areas of our game and applying that into the match. Up and down the roster everyone was able to contribute in a significant way. You can see that with a bunch of different guys all over the stat sheet.”

Middleton senior rightside Jonah Johnson had seven kills, seven aces, three digs and three blocks, while junior outside Mason King had seven kills and two blocks. Senior middle blocker Henry Dailey had five kills and three blocks, and sophomore outside hitter Tanner Goldbeck had four kills, four aces and three blocks.

Middleton’s girls tennis team competed at the Nicolet Sweet 16 on Sept. 18-19.

Here’s how the Cardinals fared in each flight.

SINGLES

No. 1 — Middleton’s Sophia Pientka defeated Cedarburg’s Caitlyn Dunn, 6-3, 6-2, in the first round. Pientka then lost to Homestead’s Brhianna Curro, 6-1, 6-1, in the second round.

No. 2 — The Cardinals’ Mira Russo downed West Bend West’s Maddie Franz, 6-0, 6-2, in the first round. Russo then fell to Neenah’s Rachel Thomas, 6-3, 7-5.

No. 3 — Middleton’s Nithya Uppal won the championship in her flight.

Uppala opened with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Homestead’s Rafi Miller, then defeated Nicolet’s Elena Johansen, 6-1, 6-2. Uppala then edged Eau Claire Memorial’s, 6-7, 6-2, 10-8, in the semifinals and bested Whitefish Bay’s Mackenzie Good, 6-3, 6-3, in the championship match.

No. 4 — Middleton’s Elodie Sabat won the championship in her flight.

The Mazomanie Village Board addressed several major infrastructure and financial matters during its September 15 meeting, including the upcoming Dane-Iowa wastewater treatment plant upgrades, the 2028 Highway Y project, Crescent Street construction and ongoing concerns with Republic Services.
