The first goal has been accomplished.

Now, Middleton’s boys tennis team will take at their other objectives.

The Cardinals clinched the Big Eight Conference last week with a perfect 9-0 record. Middleton defeated Sun Prairie, Madison La Follette and Janesville Parker by identical 7-0 scores.

“For the last few conference matches we played this week, we knew that we would be the favored team,” Middleton coach Tony Mirasola said. “But it was important that we came out and were focused and energized at every position.”

Middleton did exactly that, as it completed its romp through the league.

Here’s a recap of the Cardinals’ week:

• Middleton 7, Sun Prairie 0 — Koji Heineman, Jonathan Kim, Ian Connell and Aarush Gupta all rolled to singles wins for Middleton on June 1.

On the doubles side, Middleton’s top team of Gene Kim and Kieran Gopal posted a 3-6, 6-2, 10-6 win over Sun Prairie’s Erik Spence and Kyle Helmenstine.

No. 2 Andres Clark and Jacob Mandelbrot won 6-0, 6-0, while No. 3 Franklin Hu and Saketh Peddireddy cruised to a 6-1, 6-0 win.

“Sun Prairie has talented players, particularly up towards the top of their lineup and our guys were well prepared,” Mirasola said.

• Middleton 7, Madison La Follette 0 — The Cardinals notched straight set wins at all four singles and all three doubles flights on June 3.

Heineman, Connell, Jonathan Kim and Gupta all cruised to easy singles wins.

Gene Kim and Gopal notched a 7-5, 6-2 win at No. 1 doubles. Middleton’s No. 2 team of Clark and Hu rolled, 6-1, 6-0, while its No. 3 team of Neel Mukherjee and Peddireddy cruised to a 6-1, 6-0 win.

“La Follette was a very similar match to Sun Prairie,” Mirasola said. “(LaFollette’s No. 1 singles player) Tyger Yang is a great player, so Koji winning 6-1, 6-0 was a great win for him.”

• Middleton 7, Janesville Parker 0 — The Cardinals once again posted straight set wins at all seven flights on June 4.

Heineman, Jonathan Kim, Gupta and Ilya Rice all rolled to singles wins. And in doubles action, the teams of Connell-Gopal, Mandelbrot-Hu and Mukherjee-Peddireddy all notched comfortable wins.

“It was a great match to round out the season in Janesville,” Mirasola said. “We were down a few guys and players were playing in some different positions, but we took that in stride and finished the season strong.”
