MIDDLETON–Syrie Schmitz, 71, passed away unexpectedly on June 3, 2023. She was born on Nov. 7, 1951, in Iron Mountain, MI, the daughter of Stanley and Marjorie (Meyers) Nestingen.
Syrie graduated from James Madison Memorial High School, then continued her studies at UW-Oshkosh, where she received her bachelor’s degree. She was united in marriage to Thomas Schmitz on Aug. 15, 1981, in Madison.
Syrie worked as a teacher for the Madison Area Metropolitan School District for over 25 years before her retirement, primarily working at the school now known as, Vel Phillips Memorial High School. She enjoyed knitting, reading, volunteering and especially spending time with her family and friends.
Syrie is survived by her husband, Thomas; four sons, Matthew (Kristin) Schmitz, Casey Schmitz, Cole (Kelly) Schmitz and Robby Schmitz; grandchildren, Charlette Schmitz, Brooke and Ty Schmitz, and Haley and Clare Schmitz; and sisters, Kris (Frank) Nestingen-Palm and Julie (Donna Stoneham) Nestingen. She was preceded in death by her parents, Stanley and Marjorie; and niece, Julia Nestingen-Palm.
In keeping with Syrie's wishes a private family event will take place at a later date. Memorials may be made in Syrie’s name to the Julia Nestingen-Palm Art Scholarship
